Maybe you will be lucky and find a bearing that will fit the race of the golf and the hub of the Audi. Probably to easy for that to happen!

Well for even the search to begin, we need bearings, hubs and Golf knuckle, or maybe Corrado knuckle.
I have maybe 7-8 different bearing catalogs and some super accurate, precision "very-near" Calipers just sitting and waiting......

ok, so info I have picked up so far:

Audi 80 Axle Splines are obviously not the same as mkII VW Golf

Audi 80 uses the same bearing as a golf II PN (893 407 625)

I have ordered an Audi 80 hub with the idea of drilling it for 4x100 studs PN (8A0 407 615) 2x the cost of the vw hub...

The Audi outer joint is expensive.... ~$150/pop PN (893 498 099F)

I ordered up an outer joint to take a look and see how/if it will work in the golf knuckle, the hub will fit the bearing obviously. I'm interested to see how everything fits, specifically if the Audi 80 ends fit the mkII axle splines, or if the geometry will be the same or close enough.

So, there are possibilities I think, we'll see.

I have quite a few 4x108 wheels in a few different offsets you can try on the car for a rally before having stuff drilled. just say the word....

Thanks for testing this out Tom. I've had this on the list of possibilities to fix the CV issue - but haven't gotten to that point yet...argh

For some reason the joint I ordered doesn't fit the Audi hub, so I'll work on that...

While at fine tuning today I was digging around in the parts bin.

I found that the Corrado VR6 CV ends fit on the 020 axles....the VR6 CV ends are a similar design to the golf stuff, they are larger in diameter with alot more splines, so I may end up going this route just due to the price of the ends ($70).

axles are: 357 498 099 EMY ~$70

The Corrado's use a different hub (to fit the larger axle), but the same bearing as the Golf, so I think this will be a good fit....only PITA is I'll have to weld the 5x100 bolt pattern then drill for the 4x100 setup I have.

hubs are: 1H0 407 613 B ~$65

so $300 + machine work seems more reasonable than the Audi parts bin route...now to find out if they stop the issue

Like i wrote: we went with that. Price being a big contributor...
I also made sure that I didn't get the absolute cheapest ends I could get :-)

Not sure if this will help or not but this is some pages from a VWMS MKII Group-A prep manual I have

Most of this shiite is above my pay grade but it may help...or not.
Let me know if you want any other pages or an electronic copy you can zoom in on.

Good luck!

Tom, have you looked at a corrado G60 - I never took out the axle on my old one, but they do have the plus suspension and an O2A, so they might have the same spline count and 4x100

Off to GAP for some pictures....

EDIT: Nope looks like the same thing again, VR6 gets different hubs

That's generally the thing: VW uses the same stuff all around. That is also why I don't think that TDI-stuff will be much different.
I haven't checked the TDI stuff in the ETKA, but all gasoline engined VWs (and Seat for that matter) use the same joint for all 4x100 applications starting with the Rabbit all the way to the MK3 Golf, Passat, etc.
In the same way all 5x100 cars use the same joint regardless of car. It's even the samedamn hub...

Typical VW thing: reuse :-).

I use corrado g60 stuff on my car, it is identical to mk3 golf (not plus). The only difference is the caliper bracket (same actual calipers even, just spaced out further to accommodate 11" rotor versus 10.5" on mk3).

I took a stock hub for a G60 and cut the ID to a measurement given to me by the people with the broach. Gear works did not have the broach I needed, I ended up sending my hubs to Drive Shaft Shop where they ran the broach through them to cut the splines and then sent them back to me.

I never knew for sure what the outer CV's on my car were from, they were about 30% larger then the stock ones and I had to to a little work with the grinder to make them fit the G60/vr6 corrado hubs and upright.

Tom, talk to Chris Duplessis. He uses Audi outer CV's on his car.

I think Brian has the right idea here.... John you got time to do some weld/machine work this week?
