i had this problem with my early '02 wrx.. the autozone recommended pads needed ground, i ended up going with something different, maybe pads for an outback or forester, i don't remember exactly. my brothers later '02 did not have this problem and the AZ pads fit fine...

The stack of shims i removed from the 300zx 4-pot calipers on my gf's Silvia seem to have also been serving to cushion brake engagement. Kind of like the marcel spring in a clutch disc. Without the shims, the brakes were pretty grabby at low speed, and you could actually come to a gentle stop with so little brake effort that the brake lights didn't come on. When I finally found all the shims and put them back on, it was much easier to drive and the brake lights served a purpose again...
