tips to fix leaky subaru legacy fuel tank
September 15, 2010 05:52PM
in order to fund my rally desires i need to sell my 1994 turbo legacy sedan. however, the car is leaking fuel from the top of the tank behind the fuel pump near where the fuel goes in and the vent and breather tubes. might also be leaking from around the fuel pump gasket too. not sure where since the fuel has gotten all the dirt wet. i want to weither fix it before the sale or know how much to drop the price before i sell it without fixing.

in order to better understand the surce of the problem i am considering cutting open the floor of the trunk more around the access port for the fuel pump to have better access to the top of the tank without dropping the tank out of the car. is that a stupid idea? we would use good metal shears not a torch or cutoff wheel around the fuel soaked tank.

Duct tape, and lots of it.
Duct tape and spray in fiberglass from a chopper gun.

Then, more duct tape.

Or, run the car till gas tank is empty.
problem solved.

Do not fix a gas tank with duct tape, at least not has a permanent fix. That's ghetto, and just fucking lazy.

Is just the driveshaft in the way of dropping the tank? I would drop it and investigate WHY its actually leaking, and fix that.

As for cutting the floor, I don't remember what the floor of a subaru looks like right there, however, I would avoid cutting the body shell just to avoid dropping a tank.

the rear cross member, rear differential, rear suspension, driveshaft and exhaust are in the way of dropping the tank.

the "door' would only be about 6" x 6", just enough to reach the fittings. i would then rivet in new metal with seam sealer.

dropping the tank is rated as a 2.5 hour job in a shop with a lift and air tools, i have niether. parts are around 200 unless the tank is shot and needs replacing.

i am thinking i should just knock 400 of the price and send the car down the road. however, i am selling it to a person i work with and consider a friend so i want him to have a safe car and it really isnt in its current condition. aside from the leak the car is in god mechanical shape with a recent trans rebuild and new timing belt and pulleys.

Usually a top of the tank leak is a hose or the module seal. Best to just fix it. Once you start admitting problems and discounting it seems to never stop.

There is a new aerosol duck tape that might work also.

Timmah has obviously never worked on a car that's been salted like a bad margarita factory, nor has he had to dump a POS car for cheap money, nor has he a functioning sarcasm meter.

One super salted 1930's rolls royce, and a 1969 (I think.. it was the crazy stingray style one) kermit the frog green corvette(The things you see at a classic car restoration shop, haha), but besides that, not really, and the rest guilty, the last one especially today, I'm dead ass tired. He said ducktape, and then kept going with what to add to it. It seemed serious at the time.

My first legacy had a leak in one of the hard lines coming up from the top of the tank, the steel tube rotted around where the hose attached. It's more likely something like that than the tank itself if the top of the tank is wet with gas in the dirt. It could also just be a cracked rubber line, either one from the pump assembly or one of the cross over lines.

You can drop a tank in the driveway with a jack and stands, it isn't that bad.

actually i said duct-tape duct boy duct.

Good to see you're merely exhausted at 6 in the evening and "not yourself"

But I am going to scold you because what should have been glaringly obvious, and to all the grown ups here, was glaringly obvious, you took it to be serious.
I say that is your major problem, you are not opening your eyes, you think that you are smart and want find errors...

YOU may be want to believe somebody might try something like that, but you should at this point know that I am not so stupid that I would actually say seriously to somebody to fix their tank with duct tape.
Regardless of how tired you are.

But you're not looking at the bigger picture AND you are by your constitution trying to "assert yourself' via LOOKING FOR FAULTS, and thus you miss the glaringly obvious...

In short, you will not learn anything until you stop thinking you're so smart, and stop challenging your superiors, which for you is virtually anybody...you can ask question but learn something other than the simple declarative sentence and learn that many people are often joking around via massive exaggeration.

(Go look at Gene Ms add for his Ultra-pimp-ular trailer wheels. You have to ask yourself "why could gene figure out the exactly correct tone to respond to the buyer inquiry?"

Cause he's not a punk looking to prove everybody wrong.

what i would do is make this hole bigger by cutting straigh back from each side the oval to reach the back of the tank.

not my car, i wish it looked that nice in there.

That duct tape answer barely even registers on the scale...this is some vintage John V. Turbobricks comedy gold.

The Question:

Dismount the belts, move the accessories to a middle position check how much slack there is.

And the deadpan answer:

Then throw the belts in the washer on HOT, wash them , then heave them in the dryer on HIGH heat, if you time it right, they'll shrink just the right amount..
Probably work better than cutting the excess portion and trying to duct tape them back together, though industrial staples might work.

The best part is that the guy actually tried it confused smiley
