He has an E36 M3 rack in there which are 3.0 turns lock to lock (15.4:1 ratio) for 95's or 3.25 lock to lock (17.8:1 ratio) for the 96'+ cars. The 95's had the variable ratio racks and 96+ had a linear ratio. I don't know if that alternative is any better than the 240sx stuff. I need to find me a 240sx subframe for experimentation....

2.5 sounds so much better, I like the sound of Two point FIVE!!! Hmmm sounds wooody... sort of like GORM ah now there's a woody word GORM!

How easy is it to source the Escort front stuffs? It seems like a hassle to have to source everything from the other side of the pond every time you want something.

The E30 swap looks nice, but I think I'd still be slightly more inclined toward the 240SX. The E30's L-shaped control arms have to resist bending, while the 240SX has 510-style lateral links and tension links, so everything is pure tension and compression.

Also, notice that he still seems to be using 510/Z struts/brakes. If all you got from a subframe swap was steering, I'm not sure it would be worth it. The swap gets you steering, brakes, and a better strut design.

If you have the mad fab skillz, those strut towers he made are great, but I suspect you could do far less work by just moving the subframe (and front wheels) forward a bit.

I don't remember what the 240SX steering ratio is. Quick enough for the track, not quick enough for rally. No production car is quick enough for rally in a rear-drive car. Use a quickener.

Now you know i was luckily and happily spoiled when between the 510 and the vastly superior, decades ahead in everything Saab 96, I chose the Saab and had everything the 510 lacks all as stock in the Saab. A choice of the "slow" 2,7 turns rack or the earlier bit dimesionally identical 2,2 turns rack, solid mounted to the fire wall with a big alloy housing with bronze bushings and for the double a arms very small bushes.
Crisp, accurate, fast steering. And nice and light touch on gravel. Coupled with zero scrub radius steering it really is a remarkable set up and very easy to drive what passes for fast---just ask anybody who has driven a 96, or co driven with me...
So imagine my joy when we found the US spec Xratties---the 510 of the Naught-ies-----came with nice accurate "pretty damn quick" 2,65 turns, 64mm per turn (vs 55mm/turn for Volvo) variable rate PS.
perfectly fine for stage use...
Imagine my joy.

And imagine how tickled I was when a comparison showed that the Xratty ZF could be used on the Volvo with minimal effort..
I like minimal effort...
Minimal, I like saying that, it sounds woody Hhmmmm minimal....reminds one of Gorm.
GORM!
Hehh! heh GORM!

(Oooops wrong skit, sorry!)

Wait, are you saying an Xratty rack fits the 240 (with minimal effort)? I gotta put that in by Volvo wagon rally car plan...

What, you wanna start with a worn out one instead?

I've got a standing offer to buy it for $2500 from a guy who wants to cut out all the drivetrain and wiring for a street car. I'd rather sell it to someone who wants to crash it into a tree, though.

Dave, I'll buy it from you for $2500 and rally it.

Like, right now. If it's close enough to being in rallyable shape, I'll run it in Seed9 next week.

It's not at the shop right now. I can get it back there but not until this weekend...most likely Sunday at the earliest.

Michel,

I sent you pictures a few months ago, right? So you have the basic idea of how beat that car is, right? Biggest concern about rally readiness is whether they'll let you through tech. I ran the car as recently as Gorman 2006. Pretty sure I lost the logbook before that, but I'm a known quantity and the car is a known quantity, so I may have slipped through where I shouldn't have. Not really sure. I've never run a Rally America event with it, and probably wouldn't be allowed to. NASA has been cool with my shitbox so far, but I don't know how long that would continue.

Pics to jog your memory:

Just trying to save Tim some effort, in case these scare you away.

If you do go look at it, the Cobra seat is not included. There are two OMPs like the one on the co-driver's side.
