I would upgrade the suspension! When I ran my 71 I ended up replacing the front struts and hats a few times! It did not take much to bent a strut or try to push that sucker up into the hood! When the racing stops, you want to be drinking beer, not wrenching on cars!

No progress. good to see another 510 builder pop in. good advice on the 40mm strut tubes. have to think about that one.
I haven't started the build yet, but i did drive it to work today ![]() ![]() The guy who did the restore on this lil guy 10 years ago sourced a ton of NOS trim and interior bits. I'm def. gonna be swapping some parts around. at least the bumpers are rusty. i won't feel too bad about dingin' em up. I'm still mulling over the sr20. I really have no excuses not to do it. Such fond memories of beating on my old b13 se-r, even co-drove in one once. those lil heaps just wouldn't quit. In other news, I was a little late to the party on a 4.11 subaru viscous lsd with converted CV axles a guy had for sale. bolt-in ready for the 510. Would have been a nice addition to the dirty. For now, i am enjoying the one-wheel spin and the ultra-tame highway manners of a wildly inappropriate overdrive gear. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/08/2010 04:37PM by dirty_d. |

Yes....and they are a very tough car. The metal seems thicker than either Mazda or sube when you weld it. The seams don't readily pop apart and I never bent a strut. I rolled mine twice and I mean rolled. The first time was off a left hander, rolled down a bank a couple times and landed between a tree and stump. Had to retrieve car with a tow truck and chainsaw. Drove it home. 2nd time it went off a left hander when the road narrowed in the middle of a corner (who designs shit like that?) . We hooked the right rear wheel on something and flipped the car. I was probably doing mid 40's at least. Car rolled 3/4s and hit floor first into a huge firt tree and then slid down to the ground on my door. Pass door wouldn't open due to the rocker being pushed up. Fortunately the impact was on the bottom of the car and we just pushed down into the seats. A couple minutes later Sans rolled his Charger about 20ft before us....f'n corner... Same tow truck drug the car on its side back to the road and I raced it the next day. Porta powered the floor back down and adjusted the door. Racer taped the fender flares. The car hit so hard it actually split the seam on the gas tank in the truck...chewing gum patch. Never broke a window either time or had to replace any body panels. I did part the car after the 2nd roll and it was twisted and even in those days the parts were quite valuable. They are really one of the legend cars still and I'd think a guy would be better off selling a nice one and building something more suitable like one of those butt ugly Volvos. |

Are you sure? I thought I saw a pic of it turned up on one side???? And shouldn't you be working on that car? I spent a couple hours building a skid plate/roo bar for Malcolms Talon yesterday and they worked on the car for close to 12 hours in the shop getting it ready for Mt Hood. By the time you get that car done the only events left will be a rallyX in a field in Oregon staffed by entrants.... |

But on the other hand, you live at home with mommy and daddy. If you can't learn to prioritize and finish projects as simple as assembling a rally car, why bother with any of those other things? |

Who say's I'm not prioritizing? Finishing a rally car isn't really a huge accomplishment in one's life. Hell, it's not really that important. It's not the highest thing on my priority list. And for anyone else in my postion/age, it's irresponsible to think it should be. You should know better, lol. |

You have spent most of the time unemployed, you took the summer off, and ether your starting a business or your not, the word trying indicates that you might accomplish it about the same time you finish your rally car. Due to the fact that 5/6th of us will be dead and in the ground before you finish your car, there is really no reason to make excuses ![]() |
