The best welding machine is the one that belongs to a friend, especially if the friend is a super hot-shit welder...

Agreemsg, but your friend is always busy...

For me, working at home, the Plasma cutter is more suited to what I need. You can cut sheet steel into shapes, and cut straight lines that need no cleanup in seconds, and you can handle them immediately. Less risk of fire, no oxygen or gas bottle sitting in my garage. I can use a torch, I can weld with a torch, but after the first time using the Plasma, I don't see why you would not want one.

I didn't mean they have no place or value but a basic tool such as a torch has many uses and should be a staple in any 'racing' shop. Snips, nibblers, air chisels, whizzer wheels, grinders, reciprocating saws, band saws, mini air saws all do a great job of sheet metal cutting as do plasma cutters. I keep threatening to get one myself but it will be a dedicated name brand if I do.

I've always wanted an English wheel and a nice break, but I'd never use one enough to warrant buying one. That's a problem with living in Podunk Junction...not enough demand for cool work.

I've got a crappy princess auto (think harbour freight) brake and I'd rather that than a set of torches.

I see the argument for name brand tho.. just gotta find one that's not a grand. winking smiley
