Time to step up to two wheel drive
October 26, 2010 01:53PM
Yep that's right finally time to get rid of stock open diff, will be shopping for a clutch LSD and a R&P (3.67 just isn't cutting it) set over the winter for DooWops.

I'm poor though...anyone have or know someone who has some extras laying around they wanna sell?
It's an 020 and I have a 9A or 2H guts to choose from.

I'm thinking probably just a 4.25 as I don't like to spin the motor above 6500 much on stock ABA bottom end and KAAZ seems to be the cost effective diff option.

Any help, opinions or direction is appreciated!

The diffs from Gripper UK are the same or lesl $ than Kaaz and they will set them up with whatever ramp angles and preload you want for no extra charge. Additionally, rebuild kits are only $60-$80 instead of the $250 or so that Kaaz wants....

No brainer---aggressive ramps and 130ft/lb preload...

Listen to Wimpey.

I didn't. I bought a Kaaz. I should have bought the Gripper.

No they were all ordered to order.
But it IS about time for another round. Let's see if there's another 5 or so newbish VW guys to make the shipping worthwhile.
Last time we sent like 7 for about double what one would cost.

4.2 is certainly the more inexpensive way of going.

I'm very happy with the 4.47. 4.47 + AUG (tall 2nd) puts me in the power everywhere.

I ran the 4.2, and it was much better than the 3.67, but not as nice as the 4.47.

I haven't had a chance to run the higher gears (4.68/4.86), but I think Bushore has the 4.68 and thinks its too short.

Too short maybe using stock GEARS.

Back when there was just OPEN and overall was all that counted, I supplied a lot of final drives (considering the small pool of competitiors) to guys with European stuff and.anybody with 14" seemed to like about 4.88 and with 15" 5.1 unless they were lower powered like my little V4 on a syncronous 2bbl and then I had 5.83:1.

But depending on gear kit, 5.1 is pretty typical in the rest of the world for cars with 1:1 top..
My Saab has 0.92 in 4th so it gets 5.45:1

The reason 4.47 is nice is caise it works pretty well with some of the stock gears and 14"
(Chad, this is more for the newbies or those who never had alternate gears, hoKay?)

if a groupie buy is in the works put be down for another final drive - i have a 2nd gearbox with a diff already, and it just needs a ring & pinion to be a totally viable spare. I would be fine with anything shorter than 4.2.

Honestly I don't think any of the 4.x sets would be bad or too short, even with stock gears.

My current 4.84 r&p with stock gears seems fine(not sure what box its from but its the 3.45 - 2.12 - 1.44 - 1.13 - .89 set) in my main gearbox. I have my rev limiter set at 8000 (though i'm probably too kind to my engine and end up short shifting it most of the time hehe) so its got some legs that way at least. Ignore 1st once you're off the start line, ~115 mph at the top of 5th, I think I've topped out 5th with this gearing on stage maybe three times ever (old Shelton wild west 1300m mainline section, idaho 2007 tarmac edition in a couple spots, and the downhill tarmac bit at the end of comstock in Merritt)

I can never resist this subject.... I love(d) my gripper, made the car go like it was on rails, my favorite comments from spectators were "holy shit!! that thing pulls out of corners like a fucking freight train!". Very highly recommended. As far as final drives, I've got a 4.64 in a 9A box, short, but definitely not too short. Stays in the power band faily well with the stock gears, 1st is somewhat useable if you're smart about it. I was normally topping out 5th gear at 7700 rpm a couple of times per rally, but that was after I did some engine mods and was putting down 139hp to the wheels. Damn that car is fun to drive now, too bad rally is so expensive these days. I thought about even going to the 4.88, but was warned by the manufacturer of possibly weaker teeth due to smaller size, can't say for sure how much truth there is to that....

Coles notes: 4.64 + gripper = most fun

I totally agree - no way a 4.64 is too short, unless you have highways for rally stages.

I have 4.64 in my Golf + 9A gears (lowest fifth you can get stock), and run tarmac stuff on 195/50-15 wheels.
On my 16V I get around 190 km/h at 7500 rpm in fifth.

I would suspect that you run taller wheels/tires over there (this may be a switch to turn JVL on tongue sticking out smiley), so your top speed would be even higher.

So unless you have a very astmatic 8V unable to go past 5800 rpm, or you wanna race the way you cruise a highway, 4.64 is absolute minimum (obviously without regards to cost smiling smiley).

I would recommend againt the 5.1 though - while it may be very usefull (but totally inihilating first on stock gears), they tend to be weak. A few club mates have broken theirs. The teeth gets too small in order to get room for it in the gearbox housing.
