John if you're working on VW stuff from across the pond, I need and 02A R&P - Got a 4.24 now but something bigger would help... oh and free time to finish the car tongue sticking out smiley

I run 14's w/ short Hankooks and don't spin my 8v past 6500 very often, no need with the fat torque band...
I think the 4.2 is going to be the way to go for me, this is all great information!

Not to pick on you kaiser sosa (because this myth is so widespread) but this is simply more internet fiction made up be VW kids with 8v motors so they feel better about their choices. The truth is that the 16v motors made more torque and more ponies across the entire useful rpm band (3000rpm and up) in stock form.

And, in modified form, it simply doesn't matter if the 16v loses 5-10ft-lbs below 4000rpm because you should never be that low in the revs on stage anyway.

Amen....
Though that may not exactly be what Josh vA's point is... Just that his 8V isn't much use past 6500... Not comparing to 16V.

I'd be in the market too if you find something near or above the 5.0 range, I haven't seen much though. Jason's going to need a 5.4+ to make stock gearing really work for him.

Holy whaaaaaa!!!?????

Shortest I ever saw routinely was what was called in Sweden the "8V set" which was 5.08 final drive then the box ratios were like traditional close ratio stuff i'm used to like First 2.3,
second 1.65
third .....1.35
fourth......1.15
5th ..........0,96

But then they did the 4.2 motorsport stuff and combined it with whatever so it came out the same, the big difference being final drive PINION on the shaft being bigger..

What are you thinking Tom? 5.1 is common on 2,0 hot normal aspirated rally cars.
5.4 is for like low powered or small revvy crazy beasts.

Somebody ain't thinking something right somehow.

Sounds like time for a telephone call.
Quick, Robin!

My fancy....err...bastard gearbox gears that work pretty awesome when they are actually in the car instead of the piece of diesel gearbox I had to use at the last event:

FD 4.235
1 3.30
2 1.94
3 1.35
4 1.03
5 .84

top speed at ~6800rpm w/4.2
1 37
2 62
3 90
4 117
5 144!!?

top speed at ~6800rpm w/4.8
1 32
2 55
3 79
4 103
5 127!!!!!!!!!!!

I like short gears....they are fun.

top speed at ~7200rpm w/5.4
1 30
2 51
3 74
4 97
5 119!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

compared to my fucking awesome VWMS gears for the 020 @ 7200:

1 47
2 62
3 77
4 90
5 102!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John, the real question is can you get bigger than 4.235 FD's for the 02A?
