Welcome over here Sean!
I've always liked the All Tracs. Open Light can be a super fun class if there's competition. I think there's a few other OL cars in the NE so you're good to go there. The end goal is to learn how to play with that limit of making it and crashing and nothing makes you play with that like some good competition.

I originally picked Open Light becuase as far as I knew at the time, that was the only way I could run a 4wd car my first year rallying w/ RA's rules.

You are fairly well painted into a corner on an Open Light engine that will make an all-trac fun. Have you considered doing a V-6 swap to get up to the displacement limit?

My plan now is to sort out the cars suspension(Jvab), Gearing/differentials, and try to make the car easier to work on, It's pretty cramped 80's style.

If you can find one of the Phoenix Power 4.5:1 final drives by obsessively hunting mr2oc.com buy it at any price. It's unlikely they will ever be made again.

Tim Taylor, I am interested in why you would never rally a Celica, but you would a 323?

My 323 will always weigh at least 400lb less than any comparably built all-trac.

Oh, Mazda Comp Parts support and Mazda Contingency cash payouts also make the GTX a slightly less bad idea than an All-Trac...

Tim,
Any idea how much power a PGT 323 GTX made? Just wondering if an OL version might be worth while, out of curioucity only. My rally history started with working on and crewing for a GTX, that's why I run a Mazda based Ford too...

Not sure exactly how much power the PGT 323's make. All the old school RRE tricks from back in that era like vent holes in the bottom of the airbox etc. made about 190-200hp. I'm still contemplating doing an open light build of my spare shell with a 2.5MZR and an all-trac drivetrain swap...the shortest crank pulley ends up about 1/2" into the frame rail to make it fit...just a whole lot of work for a nebulous return.

Yeah, the engine bay wasn't much wider then the Festiva I crammed the BP 1.8L into. I damn near had to pull the engine out to change the drive belt. (one of the reasons I moved the alternator to the front of the engine.) My built up current BP engine is making around 150hp at the crank, guessing by it's 134hp at the wheels.

I saw some guy what took the engine out of a Camry (don't know the alphabet soup, lots of Zs and stuff in it) and twincharged it to make ridiculous power/torque for an MR2 and supposedly it DID actually bolt up to where the 3S-GTE used to reside. But that's a 3.3l. Did Toyota make a sub-2.6l V6?

well, well, well

I had quite the conversation with John from JVAB today. And I finally feel I'm headed in the right direction. There was one point in the conversation that John may have said, "Celica's aren't that bad"......Maybe. winking smiley

We decided that building the car for open light would be boring, and the motor would have to be fairly high strung N/A to get some ponies out of it. Were now talking about a pretty stock 3sgte(turbo) in the 200+ hp range.

This would mean that I'll be running Nasa events, as well as a few Canadian options, and all the available local stuff.

I think if I put some energy into it we can get the car up & going by Spring time.

John here's a photo of the front lower control arm:

Interesting.....I thought Jens was all gung-ho about making it a US WRC venue. Polly lost too many euros at this last one.

That's too bad. Dick's a good guy though.....in good hands.

Wow, that arm looks almost identical to my Escort arm, except the Escort ball joint is only two bolts, inline with one another.
