Howdy, I'm trying to locate a 5th gear from a 1995 Subaru Impreza.
I have a 98 RS transmission, final drive 4.11 the 5th gear in it is a .780 i want to grab one out of a 95 awd impreza as it's 5th gear is .825 (Legal in CRS:GT , open lite) If you know of where i should go to buy one of these that would be great. ![]() Thanks Alex |

Alex Alex Alex the difference is 0,045 or less than 5% in TOP GEAR. Is it really something to worry about? How often are you flat in 5th and suffering from being over-geared? With 4.11 4th gear should get you over 120mph, hell probably closer to 128 mph. (presuming to motor will pull 7000 rpm) Really? |

As a competitor in your class, I will tell you not to worry about it. Nobody in the CRS-GT class will be absolutely 100% compliant to the "stock" rules. That difference will not give you an advantage and you won't get any guff from any of us running with you.

actually they aren't as bad as you would think. I can't remember exactly how much, but it was cheap enough for me to warranted ordering a set from subaru. i ordered me up one from a 97-98 lego outback, came with a .871, but changed my mind and ended up going with a set of 4.44s instead. but even with the 4.44s, i hit 5th once or twice at pomeroy, and even with cammed 2.5 it was still like hitting a wall. but 4th hitting the rev limiter about 6600 was just over 100. fast enough for that old girl. nothing like driving the aerodynamic equivalent of a garage door in triple digits on gravel. ![]() "Rally racing makes a heroin addiction look like a vague craving for something salty" |

yup, them subarus got that same problem. well the fat ones like the legos do anyways. my car was 2900ish with no one in it, 2 fat guys plopping their asses in the car, we had to be pushing 3500. i was always happy with what she did with how portly she was. i did always wonder what that drive train in an impreza would have been like. i think damn fun. I see what a few of you are getting at.
A shorter 5th gear doesn't seem like it would help me much, or be money well spent. Sure i've gotten to engage 5th gear quite a few times my car never really accelerated while in 5th. (Desert storm, North Nevada, Idaho, Prescott, Seed 9) I'm upgrading from a fresh from the junkyard 1.8L to a fresh from a machine shop 2.5L Easily an extra 65 HP crank. Going from a 3.90 to a 4.11 final drive AND I'm swapping my OBX Torsen front diff from my 93 transmission into a 98 RS transmission. Looking at some gear/mph calculators and taking into account wheel size. I'll actually have slightly shorter gears when i'm done. But basically the 98 transmission is going to be open, the labor is free for me, if i can find a different 5th gear for a few hundred bucks why not? What else am i going to do with $200 that will make me any faster? Looks like the part i need IS cheap : http://www.subaruparts.com/cart/?pn=32315AA340 But i need help finding the correct part number .. I'm working off of : http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=25407272&postcount=3 any real help in finding this part would be awesome. If you don't think its money well spent, then tell me what i should buy for $200 that's going to make my car faster compared to buying this part. ![]() I already attend all the auto crosses, rally crosses, in my area, and all the Rallies i can attend limited by vacation days. |

YOu would be alot better off getting the 4.44 ring and pinion from Subaru which woudl effect all your gears, not just fifth.
They are about $300-$400 from Subaru for the Front ring/pinion. I'm not sure if you are staying FWD or not, but the rear diffs are easy enough to find in 4.44 (automatic foresters and outbacks). I can tell you that a 4.44 final drive is a good deal of fun with a 2.5L N/A motor. IMHO it's a much better upgrade. |

The 5th gear won't make you or the car any faster, so even free it wouldn't be a hot deal. Apply the $200 towards suspension, exhaust, 4.44 r&p, camshafts, fuel pump or any myriad of stuff that might help.
Even a 2.5 will hit a wall at the top speeds. You'd need another 100hp or better to have grunt at 100 plus mph with gears that tall. |

There we go, awesome
![]() Well damn , i figured going from .780 to .825 would make my car faster... Well Only thing left to wonder is : Suspension or Diffs first ? Currently the car is on : OBX Torsen front LSD, stock 4kg center, Open rear and Ksport Coilovers 250/200 spring rates. The Ksport coilovers are a lot better than what most say about them. with only 4" of travel i do feel they limit me on the rougher stuff and i've never raced a car with anything except Stock, or Ksport suspension so i don't know how much more there is to gain with something different. Would suspension over differentials be the best plan from here then? or get Differentials first, then suspension? I'll be getting either JVAB OR allwheelsdriven coil overs , eventually hoping to have a 1/2 extra set (one extra front, one extra rear) ![]() |

4" of travel?!? do suspension first. spring rates look good, we are running 250/225 on our jvabs. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/04/2011 07:57PM by KTurner. |
