. But, if you are interested in performance and competition then there is a different set of criteria that determines you choice of a car. Brand loyalty is not a good way to pick a rally car.

A BIG pile of all kinds of parts tho, seems to always argue by themselves. The parts lay there saying "here I am" kick me pound me use me".

But AJ and i talked a while and I think I got the idea of using pencils for planning cause pencils have erasers!

Yup! I can still erase and start over (with a little change in my pocket ta boot) if the rwd idea ends up being pointless.

I hope to meet you guys at Rally Idaho. I hope to be helping (not hindering) with the service areas.

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective... sure you can weld the center diff (and from watching people try to drive a Torsen Audi, that's probably the best you can really do with it) but remove the driveshaft and leave the car FRONT wheel drive.

Do the exhaust right, and you can convert from FWD to 4WD in about fifteen minutes.

With that engine and trans waaayy ahead of the ball joints it would likely push really awful going into a corner in RWD configuration. FWD is at least a known on those cars. Audi actually developed the AWD because they felt the FWD handled poorly. Plus the motors are amoung the most unreliable of grrmann origins.

Gene, the genesis of the rally Quattro was the turbo motors while just edging a good Ford 2.0 BDG by 2-4 bhp (Audi 265 bhp in its Group 4 Guise--yeah the car debuted in old Gp4--same Group that Escorts and Ascona 400 etc were in.---and a BDG by 78-80 was doing about 262 bhp according to these blueprints i have from Cosworth) the Audi made about 3 times the torque, and it was an effort to put that down that was the rationale behind foool time AWD.
And the motors aren't bad really--they're just a 1 cylinder longer Rabbit motor, no real bad-ness, I think most guys don't do the bosch K-jet thing very well, but this guys is "elletronico"

The REAL question is sure on paper the motor way out there looks like a disastrer.

But who knows how significant in practice that overhanging anchor will be..

Still realistically sure a well balanced RWD car would obbiously be better.

Hey Al Kun has a couple or three extras laying around...
Yeah! Datz da ticket!

Seems like most of the old 10v motors continually lose head gaskets or exhaust manifold studs. A lot of work for that engine. A 20V would at least make some hp. Here's a link detailing some history and what not. http://home.comcast.net/~gregsj2/content/audi200.html

I'm with Robert on this being a project best left undone. It's the old 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should' thing.

I saw that. The wife will shoot me if I bring home another project. Dont think I haven't had my eye out tho.

the 10v motors are for all intents and purposes are a vw 8v with an extra appendage. They do have some issues when building on a budget, for instance the intercooler likes to blow its end tanks off at anything more than 14psi. However at this point the 10vt is going in the 80. Welding up an extra center diff costs me $30. Pulling the front drive shafts and capping the outputs to see what it feels like will cost roughly 4 hours worth of shop time and is just as easy to swap back.

I understand that this may not make the best rally car. I'm not saying it is for sure going to be a rally car. However in the interest of my personal health (ie not getting shot by the wife) I have to limit myself to one project at a time. So the engine swap will need to be finished before I can sell the car. My point is "why not make it RWD for a couple of weeks and see what its like? If I do like it woohoo, if not, it's something I've always wondered what if?

My timeline for first rally was DooWops in 2012 (providing they dont get cancelled agian) any how here she is just before I pulled her heart out.

Seems like most of the old 10v motors continually lose head gaskets or exhaust manifold studs. A lot of work for that engine.

The real problem is that once you get up into marginally fun regions of power (>250hp) there will be a VERY narrow window of ignition timing between detonation on the one side, and high EGTs causing an exhaust valve to separate on the other side. IIRC the difference between blowing up one way or the other is only three degrees.

Getting to 250hp is easy, getting more than that is hard.

I never heard the reasons but back in '87 or '88 , on the FIA olympus, I think every Audi died except one privateer. The factory teams ganged up to help him at that point. It was a FWD Gt and he lost the rear beam axle...well most of it. I was the car behind him and told Damitio almost to the foot where we would find him on that stage. I was right...

I have a stock replacement Luk in my 250hp Volvo, no issues. I have a centerforce in the rally car, again no issues. I like a nice light clutch pedal, and some driveablilty

I agree with Sean about the driveability. I have been in two cars that had extremely light flywheels and sintered bronze clutches. They were horrible to drive at anything less than 100%.
