Yah, I figure, if you bash the cam gear with something, you've probably broken the timing belt anyway, which wrecks valves on any engine of consequence - any 20v, all turbos

I believe the guy who told me it was running when they pulled it. I think he may have been a little vague on how long it was sitting in the garage for. I'll be lucky if it's just dried out and I get get away with a monkey ball and some new rings

Bores are ok. Engine just sat way to long. Debating pulling pistons for a fresh hone. I have rod bearings handy.... Prolly good to do while I'm in there.

Pull pistons and soak 'em for a day or 2 in the 1 gallon pail of Carb and Choke cleaner ($15 a Auto-zoo) to soften all the carbon in the ring grooves
Watch that stuff as it is skin permeable.
Dingle-ball the bores slow speed.
Look at the upper rod bearings, lower main bearings, that's the stressed shell and where you expect to see wear first.

I gotta start shopping where you go, carb dip was $40 the last time I looked. But yeah, it works like MAGIC on carbon. We used it at the dealership for cleaning pistons, soak them overnight in the dip can and the next morning rinse with kerosene and it's ready to swap rings, oil, and go back in the engine.

The same thing happened to the first turbo Audi engine I bought. #5 had water in it and the rings rusted to the bores and stuck in the pistons. I was able to work everything free, but ended up buying another engine. Neat thing is, the first engine was a 79.5 bore block, so the bores can be taken out to 2.2l standard size. (Bad thing is the head gasket is different, some work needs done up there to use a later head and gasket)

Every 136mm rod (turbo/supercharger) engine I've had apart had ugly rod bearings. Seems to just be a fact of life that the bearings only last 80k or so. Do 'em.

The 5 gallon bucket of carb cleaner that I bought at NAPA (with company discount) was $95. John's price estimates are always about a decade old!

The 1 gallon pail should be all you need, really. Pistons and valves will fit in there, and carburetors too I guess. Just don't put anything rubber or plastic in there, unless you don't care about it.

Guy who clued me in to carb dip told me that if you put a valve seal in there overnight, the next morning it would be a bracelet. Also to never put anything aluminum in it unless it was fully submerged.

Hmm, I wonder if a TDI intake manifold would fit in a 5 gallon pail. $95 is a lot but it's cheaper than a new part, OR the amount of labor it takes to get a quart of carbon out of the manifold.

.
2 Volvo 96mm pistons can squeeze in at a time.
And they come out like germ-free, and gleaming!

Why for?

I know some cleaners EAT aluminum... but why use it if it can be fully submerged? Does the air do strange things? Or is it for "even eating?"

He said he thought he'd be cool and put a cylinder head in one half at a time, but there was a bunch of pitting at the water line so he scrapped that idea (and the head).

Hmm. Weird. I wonder what it's reacting with. I'll keep that in mind, though.

Just to address the tune question - just did a shakedown - full boost was just over 11 @11.2, long boost would go to 10.9 or so - so its running a bit rich, there's room to grow, but its a safe tune right now...too bad my standalone ecu lost comm's to the lap top - just another component to debug...
