Is there such a thing as a lightweight hood for the X-ratty?

John, do you own one of these contraptions now as well? I seem to recall you being in the NE - have you poked your rockers with a screwdriver?
Yes lightweight hoods do exist, but they don't come cheap. I suspect a cossie hood weighs less (and has cutouts for vents), and there's usually some CF hoods being sold on ebay (though I can't say anything about their quality). |

Yeah but silly expensive.
Cut some of the reinforcing and dump the blankey. The hatch glass IS heavy The MOTOR is HEAVY. Just to note: My car with a good cage and 100% stitch welding and road car seats at groan 50~~~lbs each but no sump guard weight on a certified scale 2715lbs Cossie motor and 4x4 box diff, drive shafts, knuckles etc. Including the "wings" and glass in the hatch. And get the "Tupperware off and look for tin worms at bottom of sill and where the floor meets the sills inside the car. Weight loss is always a goal with me, although I find it easier to achieve on my cars than for myself! ;-) Thanks for the info guys.

And if you have lots and lots of tinworm, I have a spare XR4 shell in Nude Hamster that my parents would LOVE to see hauled out from behind their barn...and way too many XR4 parts to count. The shell's not perfect, but better than most, I'm saving it for a "spare", but at the rate I'm going with my build, it'll be 2016 before I have a running car and gasoline will be $2500 a gallon.
JV, you get my email (sent late Sunday night)? If no, then 2.25" spring setup please, and leave me a message on my cell phone. Andrew Steere Lyndeborough, NH KB1PJY |

The wings aren't really that heavy ( the single wing weighs more- solid molded concrete reenforced plastic), someone just gave me a spare dual wing hatch sans glass. Most of the wieght is the glass. I also got a spare hood with cutouts for the vents. One's alittle off though.

So, who has weighed the hatch glass? Anyone replaced it with lexan?

I picked up a 89 (big opening) hatch without glass in it, but with the solid single wing, and couldn't believe how light it was. That sheet of glass in the back is biiiigggg... |
Thanks Paddy-I figured it was a big weight hog. Would be nice to remove weight from both the front and rear. Not sure what's heavy up there, but I'll find out soon enough.

The ebay carbon hoods are grp with carbon on top, and not much lighter than a cheaper GRP. There's a guy that makes one that is 4 lbs. and full carbon for $500.
You can get a fiberglass, gutted hatch from Demon Tweeks. Shipping would probably be nuts. Actually, you can get front fenders, bumpers, doors, hoods, hatch, and spoiler's in GRP from Demon Tweeks. Grant Hughes |
Grant, I'm not finding any GRP bits from Demon Tweeks? What search string do you use on their site?

Choose Ford > Mk1 Sierra 82-87 Looks like no more bumpers. I considered ordering the hatch through Checkpoint racing where I special order all my Demon Tweeks stuff now since then I save on shipping costs by subsidizing it through their seat sales. They're selling alot of seats these days too. I believe all the parts are made by MC Rallying and could likely be ordered through BAT or OPMD as well. http://www.mcrallying.net/indexa.htm Here's DT part numbers and prices using a 1.82 exchange rate.
