put your thinking caps on, rwd rear subframes?
February 18, 2011 05:48PM
so rack your little rally brains and think about this for a little bit. What's out there in junk yard land in the way of IRS, but has for the most part a removable rear subframe assemble?

kind of like that exploder in that focus thread. Or some older jap stuff. I know the late 80s early 90s, ie where JVL likes to get all his rear ends from, had a drop out rear subframe that held all the bits together.

closest is the supra MK3, farthest MK2

any thoughts, ideas, something rally worthy, or at least not a worthless POS.

clearly i'm just randomly coming up with ideas for god only knows what. yeah sure, IRS a solid axle car. That shouldn't take more then a weekend. smiling smiley

BMW E30 Z3 or E36 TI is similar to the MkII setup in your picture, but doesn't have that wavy looking deal, its more of a straight beam.

I like straight looking stuff, that way when it looks bent, you'll know it is. Damn multi-link crap on the evo is all swoopy and makes it hard to tell if its tweaked until you remove it and compare to a known non-bent part.

so is that a better design then say the MkIII. It seems the II might be more of a robust design but give you less tune-ability. but there in lies the reason to also just keep the big stick out back, you can't get much simpler then that. and the less foo foo crap you have the better.

but still i like thinking of new awesome messed up ideas. smiling smiley

put a volvo 1030 axle back there, plentiful and cheep, nice brakes, any ratio dana 30 ring and pinions cost $125, rather bomb-proof. There I said it.

because i already put a toyota axle back there. grinning smiley

this was just something i was talking to someone about the other day. you know bench racing. it seemed that i wouldn't be impossible to take a "all in one" rear subframe and put it damn near anywhere you wanted it to be. And because it was an all in one, you at the least would need to just make mounting points for it. probably spring and shock spots too.

but if you look at that pic of the exploder set up it's springs and shocks were all right there, so you could maybe get away with using them.

idk, just stirring up conversation. to much school work makes me bored as hell, i got to talk rally some how and i'm stuck sitting in front of my computer so might as well talk here. smiling smiley

Pretty much everything is a subassembly that bolts up with four or six bolts, that way the assembly line part of the job is quick and simple, and you can more easily isolate the suspension from the driver with another layer of rubber (or fancy hydraulic) bushings.

I remember a co-worker threw a Thunderbird IRS under his 50's Chevy pickup about ten years ago. Real easy, just do some measuring, make some places for it to bolt to, and he sent the hubs out to be redrilled to Chevy instead of 5x108 (who the hell uses that?). I think his driveshaft even worked properly. Bear in mind that it's a simple frame design, and all it had to do was be better than the 2" travel leaf spring solid axle he was pulling out.

I love this stuff but swapping irs in too a solid axle car thats worth its beans I think is kind of a
wast of time, such as escorts volvos carollas and some others. Seems like most the starlet carolla
and escort guys do freeking amazing with there beams elce where. I love the irs diffs out of
exploders and supras just because they are sooo cheap to change gears and diffs with new parts,
I don't know much about bmw diffs they seem ok, except can you get a good limited slip and new
gears for under 450 bucks combined? I know the r 200 is bitchin but limited slips and gears are a
pain if your happy with there stock gears not a bad option. I see it if redneck off roaders or circle
track guys don't like it its going to be expensive. Like the toyleta diff uses truck gears as well as
the exploder. I have a whole jag rear end hear now and holy hell what a monster and damn those
brakes there cool but being on the diff quick service is tossed out the window.

want to talk crazy? how about this, You can buy new un molested ford 9" housings and if you cut
them down and weld a new explorer dust seal holder on to it. Then plug exploder cvs in to it. How
about them apples!! What it would be good for I don't know, wicked hot rod application maybe. You
can weld anything on to the back for bushings and then bolt a bushing mount on the the front bearing
carrier flange.

hear is a jag set up my friend put together they are so easy to mount on to a frame.

A 97 lincoln mark 8 has a tough looking rear IRS. Good for the big v8 ford power plant. Probably bullet proof with a 2.3 liter. I dont think theres much travel maybe 6 to 8"s.

well sure, i have some subaru ones around too, but mine nor yours were meant to be rwd. and there in lies some problems of suspention geometry. when very briefly i made my old legacy rwd i had problems getting going on wet pavement. like even getting stuck on a hill. the car wasn't really set up to transfer the weight to the rear.

You'd need to fab strut towers, but a 240SX rear subframe is an option.

The R200 has a few different gearing options as well:
3.916:1
4.083:1 (stock)
4.363:1
4.600:1

But BUT! BUT!!!!

Matt, where'd you typically find those alternate R200 ratios??
There's a couple of people talking about doing sNisssan over on the other place and if you were to go there and tell 'em about what a fine group of pro-rwd loons there are here, we could ALL learn more..

And weren't you 'spossed to be talking with me about real boingers for your car? You still intending to prep that?
