Another Honda
March 03, 2011 02:49PM
I've been too busy to complete the EP3 but I really want to get back into the drivers seat so I bought a Honda Challenge EG6 Civic. I picked it about 10 days ago and the plan is to get it ready for the Euro Rally thing later this month and then Max Attack in April!

I got a killer deal on the car since the previous owner removed and sold the road racing specific items. The goal is build a winning 2WD car for under $12k.

In the next couple of weeks it's getting a proper final drive and suspension.

Awesome, another EG6 to join to ranks.

Is the cage good for rally. Normally the NASA cages are pretty lame. Also what engine does it come with? I see it was an H2 class so, is it a B18/B20? What final drive are you thinking of? You can do the Gear X close ratio gears instead for a better spacing and keep the stock final drive.

It needs new driver door bars but the rest of the cage is "ok". It has a K20A3 in it right now that is pretty fresh and makes good power with a kpro. The car comes across the scales around 2250lbs.

I went with a 5.84 FD 6sd with a KAAZ diff.

I'm excited to get back out there!

I'm running Compomotive Evo wheels and tires, everything fits just right, but I have 5 lug hubs not the 4 lugs.

I'm sure your car has the 4x100 hubs, so an OE 15" is a good option without having to spend $$$ for fancy rally wheels. I'd also recommend running a 195 tire as it fits great in the wheel well and just right for the 5.84 final drive. Which FD brand are you thinking of going with?

I have the mfactory FD on order. The tranny shop I'm using is a dealer so it made sense. I know I could have installed it myself but I'm short on time.

I think i'm going with factory alloy for now to keep cost down. It looks like a most 4 lug 15" SI wheels will work. The only challenge may be my brakes. I have a Wilwood 11.1" brake kit, which just fits under the 15" Rota's that are on there.

I stripped an mfactory FD in 3 stages at Rally WV back in 2008. Completely stripped the teeth on the pinion. When I called them about it, they said basically tuff luck, not their fault, that it was a bad install!! Also if you look the mfactory reputation in Ireland, all of their FD's were stripping on 160hp in just a few stages. There was a thread over at rallyforums.com in the Garage section where tons of people complained about them. Those FD just cant take the shock loads that we see in rally. Gear-X are the only ones copping with the abuse on the Irish tar. I had one in my old acura after the mfactory and never gave me any bother. And its what I have in my new civic too.

I can send you pics of what the pinion looked like. All that metal in the box ruined the whole gearset and it ended up seazing on a transit and locking the tires. Made it real fun to put in on the trailer!

As for the brakes, if the brakes are only 11.1 then all you need to do is put a small wheel spacer to keep the caliper away from the spokes. I run 300mm discs ~11.75" with BIG 4 piston calipers and fits fine under a 15" but its get 10mm spacers with on the 50 offset compo wheels

Interesting...I know that there's been some heated discussions about quality of both brands. Fingers crossed my lasts a little longer than your! I'll have my spare 5sp 4.7 ready as spare just in case.

Here's the current set up with a 25mm spacer.

Holly crap 25mm spacer, how far is the disc from the lower ball joint? Also that caliper has a very large upper radius so its a tight fit at the spokes thats for sure.

It does fit the 15" Rota's so I'm sure a proper gravel wheel will fit, just not so sure about a oem wheel. I think the spacers were really used to widen the front stance and you can get away with only a 10mm spacer to clear the wheels.

Since you're the resident brake expert, what would your recommendation for a front brake master cylinder be, size wise, using my tilton floor mounted pedal box , which has a 5.5-6.0:1 pedal ratio? Would I go bigger with the 6-pots to move more fluid?

Yea those 25mm spacers are scrub radius galore. I'm sure the torque steer would be pretty bad too.

I noticed a bit of torque steer on mine and I only have 10mm spacers on 50et wheels, but the amount of caster is probably the cause.

As for the MC recommendation, I need to know the piston sizes, disc diameter, disc anulus or radial pad hight, and then the same for the rear. If I were you I would just resell that kit to the road race kids on Honda Tech. That kit doesnt have much more on an ITR setup besides maybe more thermal capacity from the bigger disc and lighter caliper. But tell me the specs and I'll tell you what MC's to run.

No its a Performance Friction forged monoblock caliper. I designed this kit, got a thin floating disc for gravel and for tarmac I have a thicker one. The rear is a 2 piston F2000 caliper.
