X in roof... More tubing, two additional gussets, no ability to run the V in the rear stays. With a main hoop X we prefer a V in the roof and V in the rear. One benefit is if you have to crawl out the truck or rear hatch of the car you can actually fit through the V easier than a X. I know of one roll where that was the only way they could get out of the car was through the rear.
Anyhow, why would you do an X with the current rules anyhow? Plus, havent' you heard, an X will tear away in an impact and the short bar will impail your head... (sarcasm here...)

Lol, I was just thinking of benefits for the slanted main hoop. I have V's in my car.

I've got a slanted main hoop in my car. Was a good thing I did, I needed all the room with how far back I am because of the floor mounted pedals.

Gene,
Can the main hoop X have have bends at the tube ends so the X sits 3-4" back from the the "plane" of the main hoop to provide more room for the driver/co-driver?

Good idea, but no.

Straight tubes are required for the X.

Hey Geno!

For the main hoop X; 1.5 inch tubing is good, right? One leg is continuous, 2 tacos, etc. etc.

Here is what we have done so far:

The upward bow in the roof bars looks good. Nice planning and work.

Just a note for your next cage (not this one...). It is a nice idea to bow the windshield header bar outward so that it follows along the upper curvature of the WS. That helps in case of a slow rollover (when the engine weight up front tends to put more weight on the front edge of the roof than on the rear.) This bowed bar helps keep the upper WS opening in better shape in that case, and provides a good set of pry points to work against when you go to strighten out the upper edge of the WS opening.....

Regards,
Mark B.

Thanks for the compliment, I just sorta guessed on the degree of the bend and length and notched the tubing with a sawzall and they both fit perfect! The front of the V the bars are 4" from the jct of the windshield bar and the A pillar.

Gene, our car has some crazy 1/8" plate gussets for the tacos, can i consider the end of that gusset the junction and place the A-pillar support bar 4" down from that

Since it is not a required element on your particular cage you can.

Thanks for going thru the trouble to update that old cage btw.

Grant, there is nothing to be gained with your main hoop bend as shown. It doesn't gain any room over tilting the whole hoop back 3 degrees or so.

What about the more squareness of the connection of the half lateral to main hoop and rear stays? Not pictured yet in that drawing...

I don't see how putting a complex bend in there makes the 1/2 lateral joint more square. Looks like it makes it less square?

Grant, Gene,

The latest App J Art 253 (from earlier this month) now specifically forbids that sort of bend in the main hoop:

8.2.3 Main rollbar (Drawing 253-1) :
Transverse and near-vertical (maximum angle +/-10° to the
vertical) single piece tubular hoop located across the vehicle just
behind the front seats.
The tube axis must be within one single plane.

...

8.2.5 Lateral rollbar (Drawing 253-2) :
Near-longitudinal and near-vertical single piece tubular hoop
located along the right or left side of the vehicle, the front pillar of
which follows the windscreen pillar and the rear pillar of which is
near-vertical and located just behind the front seats.

The rear pillar must be straight in side view.

Just happened to notice that when I was looking for something else...

I must have printed out my latest copy of 253 just before the update came out! I think I'm still ok though!
