Another thing to think about with long shoulder harnesses is the amount of lateral movement they will allow. For example, when Ari Vatanen had his big wreck in Argentina in 1985 and almost died, most of his injuries were due to his seat breaking and him being flung all around the cockpit. Mind you, seats are built stronger and safer these days, but shorter shoulder straps would limit that movement. Even current standard composite seats will flex a lot in a rollover. You don't want to be banging heads with your codriver or have your head or arm pop out of the side window (like Carlos Sainz in Australia, check the video below.) Of course, the modern winged head rest type seats pretty much eliminate that problem.

Yes, and then do it:
- any of the other 4 ways ID'd in the FIA rules
- finally, the way Gene says (Gee, I wish I had that kind of power.......)

Thanks everyone! I will be adding a bar onto the main hoop, but not in the same plane. Basically like Tim's picture. I can always add a second bar between the stays if needed.

Yes. Bolted to the floor with large washers and weld in blind nuts
