I'm a die hard Chevy guy, got a yard full of them. Just sold on of my Blazers, have one left. Have thought about the rally situation. I can't see it as being good. They are heavy for the size. The suspension has no travel, even in 4X trim. I think everything up front would need to be redesigned and custom made to get decent travel and proper geometry.

So you would be spending lots of time developing the Blazer, likely much of that being disappointed. Just because Bill makes an off road Ford work doesn't mean everyone should. Some guys marry ugly chicks...just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Weight is your enemy in racing. Heavy cars mean more brake issues, more tire issues, more suspension issues, slower acceleration, slower cornering speeds, longer braking zones, more damage when you crash. I would look to be under 2800 all said and done and for myself I 'd try and stay well under 2500lbs. Lite is mite...

Grant hit the nail on the head on why some of the guys like their trucks. They're really desert off-road guys who also rally, for the most part.

Are you cereal about one of those Syclone/Typhoid things? They're all collected by 3.8 turbo Buick pervs and cost actual money. A stock S10/S15 Blazer is not a rally car. I'd do a 2wd pick-em-up truck before one of the Blazers.

Take Durango, drive to US 2. Drive 1700 miles or so. Pick up $500 Volvo in Seattle, borrow tow dolly @ Uhaul, drive back.

4 days! Or something. smiling smiley

$500 fawkin Dollars!!! Jeeeezuz!

Someone ran a blazer or jimmy up Pikes Peak back in 05 I think. Pretty interesting little truck. I dont know how it did but it did sit rather low.

There's a tube frame SUV run by one of the local guys, but I think they're a Ford family. Nothing really left of the car other than the outline...and even that's all done in fiberglass.

There was also the Jesse James TV show car sometime around there as well.

Of course Monster's car is an SUV...Suzuki SX4...LOL

Drop in and GO! Certainly, you don't mean caged, suspended, with ample seating!?

Jesse James was there in 04' with the superchaged carb'd blazer they built on the show... It got prepped in the same shop we were using in Colorado springs to prep Mach 2 Racing's car... Forget the name of the engine shop - but they were awesome. (None of the guys there could keep up with the Canadians or the Brits at the bar though!)

I didn't get to spectate that year. Took a fun run up the hill in the s4, wiring came loose, kissed teh downpipe, and goodbye ecu. I did however have some fun at one of the CO springs bars with some canadians. plus the jetpack dude was fun to watch.

Condemn me for it if you want but I dont see anyone having a baja truck and not wanting to dabble in rallly. If its off road, local and passes scrutineering, then get it sideways. I'm sure none of the rally guys have ever wanted to have the fun of running a tarmac hillclimb in their dirt car. I mean really why spend more time behind the wheel than you have to.

Well we're not exactly talking about a Baja truck. The discussion is about building a 2wd Blazer. Entirely different animals.

This is by far the worst idea I have ever heard. And between car surfing in parking lots, standing on little moving dollies and "kart skiing" behind gokarts holding onto the harness as a rope, and "jousting" at the long/triple jump pits at track practice, plus countless others... I have some idea of stupid, haha

I understand, it just bugs me how people want to install massive divisions between each type of racing.

IMHO, nobody here is putting up divisions, but it has happened. SCCA put a rule in Pro Rally that required the base of any driving lights to be below the base of the windshield. It was to keep from looking like off-road trucks with their lights on the roof, and probably to look Euro-rallyish. Yeah, that kind of 'differentiation' bugs me too.

This discussion is about specific vehicle's suitability for rally, that is not very well adpated to rally conditions.

Mark B.

Exactly what Mark says.

I have no issues with desert racing, I wished I were closer. If someone wants to build a real desert racer and then rally it I'm ok with that. They generally don't do real well, Bill holds his own but not dominant. Here we are talking about someone building a Blazer for rally and that is not the best idea. You could try to race an Impreza in the Parker 400 or whatever they have these days. You can hammer nails with the butt of a pistol too, doesn't mean its a good idea.

Different disciplines of racing require different cars and sometimes totally different designs and functionality, beyond that most of us are car guys and they are all admired and respected to some degree.
