next.....bender and chop saw. Really got it for my Taco, doing an SAS on it. But the bender and chop saw will be for roll cages in that and the Jackalope.

Hey Max,

Jim and I were talking the other day and wondering what you are up to.

I'm on my way to Alaska for a few weeks. When I get back we should get together with Jim and Christy.

Nice welder!

Get one of these instead of the chop saw; way better. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=milwaukee+band+saw&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=12759432239122107150&sa=X&ei=ObatTfbJNsPciAKrtfnYDA&ved=0CFYQ8gIwBQ#

Defiantly go with A carbide tooth low RPM chop saw. I have both and I havent used the POS band saw in 3 years at least. I use the chop saw at least once a week. Theres nothing out of the car that a chop saw cant cut better. And if your cutting a cage out then you would use a saws all. that will work better then that junk ban saw.

It was brought up before about angles of cut. The chop saw and band saw will cut the same angles because of guides on the band saw limit angle. The blade will come off that style band saw if you slightly get off track. The blade binds up and spins itself off.

Most of the time I cut 90 degrees and use the tube notcher to make the final angles. The chop saw blade will also last 100 times longer then a band saw blade. A chop saw will cut 1 3/4" DOM tube in approx 3 to 5 seconds.

I know this is a little rant on my part but I started with the band saw and ended up with the chop saw that was $50.00 cheaper.

I have a Milwaukee porta-band. Close to 20 years of use on that old saw. I do this every day professionally. I don't have a chop saw. Porta bands do require the occasional blade put back on but the big difference for me is the ease of use. I can clamp a tube in the vice and cut the ends easily. With a chop saw it pretty much requires two people if the tube is over a couple feet long. Porta band goes where ever needed, you go to the chop saw. Always another side to a coin smiling smiley

The best use Ive found for a porta band is doing conduit for electrical wire. It is the bomb for that I will agree.

A race car garage should have a spot to store your tube. Right above or below that is a chop saw on a bench with a block on 1 end to support your 20' long tube. Ive never needed help cutting tubing for a cage. Also try to hold that new 20' piece of tube in a vise and clamp it.

I think 'personal preference' wins the 'chop saw vs band saw' debate. haha

What happens when you have a 10ft piece cut for the 1/2 lateral and it has a 35* bend and a 45* bend and a 10*kink for the A pillar taper ? How do you gracefully notch the ends with a chop saw? Very easy with a porta band and the vise to hold it. Cutting down 20 footers with either tool is easy stuff.

Just get one of each. You can never have too many tools. And no need to compromise!

vice? clamps? Bah! Girly stuff! I just hold the 20 footer in one hand and the porta-band in the other, and presto choppo!

I use a V block and rougher in a lathe to do the notches works very well. The last I new neither a band saw or a chop saw could cut round notches. The angle really doesnt matter at a rough cut stage. You can come up with that 1 spot where it may be handy but I wouldnt buy based on that 1 spot.

I agree with Jon on this. It is personal preference!

Like I said before I have a Milwaukee porta band (from my construction days)and a chop saw wins 99% of the time. So for a fab race garage I would go with the chop saw.

That is a nice welder by the way. Lots of fun projects you can build now.

Been thinkin' about selling my 135 to pick up one of those machines.

I've used that milwaukee porta-band with a chop stand and its real slick until I need to cut any sort of angle. Next saw I pick up will be a proper band saw for metal

So what the heck is a v block and rougher in a lathe? (I don't get out much) I learned to notch tubing with a torch back in the old days...
