I'm not normally a 'cubic inch' kinda guy, but I've heard that the v8 swap into the Miata actually works well and that seems to be supported by the (albeit biased) MonsterMiata site.
Besides which, a miata's primary use would be self indulgent fun anyway, and it would be hard to beat the burble of a 5l engine with free flowing exhaust.
