It may sound strange to some but I really think the proper order is drinking beer first, then understanding comes next.
Or drive car with good set up, then drink beer and then understand.
Problem is when we don't understand enough is that we can argue our way up a million dead ends that "seem" logic or "ideally it should be balh blah" but in the end you still gotta bolt them up, drive the car and feel what is right.
And clearly rally suspension for gravel seems to baffle most in the business who have paid the rent selling stuff to guys on some idealized surfaces.

REAL understanding always comes after experience, so one way to get real understanding is to get real experience.

Think of it this way: before you ever had your first REAL girlfriend, you probably had though a lot about the ol' horisontal mambo, hiding the zucchini, the 2 backed beast, etc......and fat lotta good all that thinking did once you had inserted the ligham into the yoni!
Afterwards you didn't think a lot, you just wanted to insert lingham into yoni as often as possible.. That was correct! Your body knew what was needed!

For those that skim, what I'm reading here is:

Step 1) drink beer
Step 2) drive car...or do this as step 1
Step 3) think about car's handling
Step 4) play hide the stick
Step 5) repeat steps 1-4 until suspension is dialed in.

Ran this by the wife last night.... Didn't work. Now I'm never gonna understand suspension, step 4 is a bastard.

I appreciate all the info and advice guys.

Nice bottle of wine, some thought out but not too heavy home cooked food, and some good tunes are usually a good start. If it comes in a box or uses a microwave it's no good. I think cooking is the biggest key though. Just always remember, girls prefer cooked eggs in the morning, not fertilized. Fertilized can be a quick move to step 5, which often leads to selling rally cars or at least not rallying for a few years. smiling smiley

lol. I'm in the middle of a few years of no toys, I'm just pushing the envelope a bit. Besides which I am the cook at our house... and that charm has worn off.

Turns out the easiest way is to give her a few bux and send her out with one of her girlfriends for a couple of drinks. If the kids are in bed by the time she gets home, all is well.

I dont think that the dinner and wine in and of itself does the trick,(a regular occurrence at our house) its the going outside the norm to make her day better. Chicks like novelty, thats why they collect so much shit. If its new, its different, but its not life changing they want it, or think it .

One funny thing i get when i ask someone (clueless) about how their car handles.

"Do you get steady state understeer?"

"No, i know how to kick the rear end free "

i like the 1-4 plan. I've been doing #1 and #4 a lot lately, but barely any 2 and 3 (not complaining too much) next pay check i'll buy some non bald, cording tires and i'll be able to drive on dirt again. thumbs up

We've got a dual empty lot next to us. I park there cause I drip alot of oil. It's been nonstop mudslinging as we've had rain coming down non-stop for like 36 hours now. I'm trying to see if I can sling mud onto every fence and car in the immediate vicinity. Almost hit a dumpster this morning. Just kept it pinned and barely missed it. Wouldn't have mattered to me in the slightest either. Beauty of a $200 Impreza.

Sweet, i took my imp "rock crawling" yesterday ... sorta by accident. was scoping out some "new to me" dirt roads and off road areas around sun valley

got a bit confused and my buddy pointed out a sure way back to the pavement, but there was a short short section that i had to crawl over some small rocks.

Skid plate works. grinning smiley i treat my car like its a $200 car.. lol

Just ask Victor what he uses on his quattro. It works well enough that he is chewing on sube tail pipes in open class. I have a book I like called "The race and rally car source book" by Allan Staniforth available on Amazon. It has a bunch of basic info on suspension design. Tim Taylor has a 900 page text book on suspension that is all math and no pictures...

Drinking helps motivation and discussion.
Medical marijuana helps understanding and deep thoughts. Uh... I mean back pain and glaucoma. Did you know that Denver has like 50 times the incidence for severe chronic pain in males aged 18-25. smiling smiley

I personally don't condone either. Motivation, wisdom, and strength all come from one place and one place alone. I'll give you a hint. It starts with a v and rhymes with a heart condition/
