Fuel Filter

Hey Guys, Last year Joel and I went through and installed an lines that route through the cabin in our AE86 everything seems to work well other than our fuel filter clogs frequently.

We've got a really cheap jegs inline fuel filter and it must be for drag racing or something beacuse we've clogged it to the point where the car won't rev up at all at least a half dozen times.

We used -6 lines, we're looking for something with a bigger paper filter element but nothing huge because it's current placement doesn't have much extra room, I'll provide some pictures when I get home.

I really like the Bosch filters found in lots of Saabs, Volvos and VWs.
M12 x 1.5 on one side, M14 on the other.
Find room.

I did -6 An in the Merkur. The stock Ford fuel line ends at the filter are quick connect, and they are inserted into plastic lines. If you use a heat gun on the line and get the end out, you end up with a quick connect fitting with a barb end that fits snuggly into -6 flex hose. Use a ford filter, same filter fits pretty much every ford car/truck. The ford pick ups have a really nice filter bracket that the filter snaps into, so you can change the filter with zero tools!

Also, make sure you have a filter on the fuel tank vent line. If you removed the crabon canister, what did you do with the line? I put a lawn mower clear fuel filter on mine. That line lets in the air that is needed as the tank drains. I have never plugged a filter.


Or you can buy the banjo to AN fittings and run the Bosch filter as John suggests.

Can you remember which Ford truck you used? The Ford truck filters I have seen recently have the filter bracket but the filters have two outlets and one inlet.

Be easier to answer when we see what you have in use now. However, the filter you use now is working or it wouldn't clog. You're asking to increase the storage capacity of your filter or finding a filter with a less effective element that won't clog. Better answer is to clean the fuel tank as that is the real problem.

Most modern US desinged fuel filters are about the same size, either Ford or GM. They are designed to handle normal fuel flow for 100k miles is no unusual contaminants. Their size is due to the constant recycling of gas because of the return system. They cycle many times the amount of gas the engine uses.

So..clean your tank, make sure you have a sock or pre-strainer in the tank. Use clean fuel, use a coffee filter or panty hose to pour your gas thru. Carbed or EFI on your engine? If you have a return fuel line, that system can be converter to a single line. Easy on carbs just watch the fuel pressure. On EFI you can get a rising rate regulator.

And clean your fuel system.....plugged fuel lines can lead to severe detonation and burnt pistons, sand blasted cylinder walls and very nasty pock marks all over the cylinder head combustion chamber...been ther done that, expensive.

we just cleaned out the tank and the have a sock on the fuel pump, I think the filter works extremely well and doesn't have enough capacity

John V is this the saab filter you're talking about?

Blake I think you're right. (And Jon should think hard what a plugged filter is going to to to his Subarat motor which we know are not particularly durable ----a little starvation and it goes a smidgen lean and KABOOOOOOM!)

Just look at the area/volume.
The big Bosch ALL METAL thang generally go a million miles and particularly the VW versions have a nice simple bracket..

Gotta ask: whatcher got that fancy schmantzy pressure regulator and gauge thang for?

You have some insane pump you need to regulate down for the Toyota? Adjustable? Maybe you could scoot it over to make room for the Bosch filter

I agree that filter lacks capacity. As soon as one of those little screens gets plugged you're poked. A standard old Chevy truck from about 1988 thru now will have a nice filter, available most everywhere. Uses a modified flare nut arrangement on both ends or the Ford filter Sean mentioned. I would avoid any filter that uses a banjo fitting and sealing rings because they are more prone to leaks and its easy to lose the seal ring in the heat of battle.

There should be plenty of room to mount a filter there, just add some line for a loop or put the filter in the back at the tank and leave the screens out of the little one.

hmmm...the filter I linked to looks very different on the inside (in a good way, I hope)....I'll snap a pic in a minute here....
