If you look at the RA rule I referenced, it references a section from FIA 253 document. Basically I think it's a three layer honeycomb with carbon fiber outer layer. Like a fancy door card.

" Also so safe is the new design that the FIA is now looking to make the unique side impact configuration mandatory in future designs of motorsport roll cages."

I wonder what Mike Hurst and RA have to say about that, seems to go against everything they've been saying.

Note the nice thick chunk of impact foam between the seat shell, and the b pillar/sill area.

That was my first thought.

So... They've revolutionized cage design by using a similar design to what the SCCA club racing, roadrace cars I've crewed for have had for a LONG time? grinning smiley

Edit to add: Am I missing something or is Mini just building (and the FIA talking about mandating) NASCAR bars?

Those aren't NASCAR bars. NASCAR bars are the ones that go way out and have a bunch of little vertical components.

Way out? They extend into the door area, which is effectively what these are doing, though not all the way to the edge of the door skin. As for the vertical components, I couldn't really tell if that was a vertical support or a gusset. Either way, the design, IMO, is reminiscent of NASCAR bars.

Sometimes they even have a full sheetmetal skin on the outside of the bars, too.
