Cool. Between your codriving and rally cross you know what rally is about. Oh I talked to Mr. Hurst for mine FYI.

Ya Chris was very fast in his 3.3!

didn't realize he was racing with an exception wavier to the open rule. I was running my 14th rally, (1st in Open Light) after doing 13 in a production FWD.

I slid off the road, Chris was fine. there was also a new open lite driver who rolled his car. sad smiley (i think J.price is fairly new)

I sorta get their rule, and i don't. Is their rule for the laywers , insurance company. i could see insurance guys reducing their rates slightly that only experienced drivers are allowed in the fastest 3 classes . (open, super production, G5)

I believe they are making this based on their own experience. Both Niday and Havir did a couple of events in low spec poo-cars, then went crazy high dollar blue Subie route, Havir spending hundreds of thousands on a Pro-drive USA built car (Prodrive USA had one customer: Doug Havir) and then went out and promptly wadded their cars, Niday maybe once, Havir like 4 times in the 22 events he did.
So in their own experience they have reason to believe that newbs are dangerous but they don't factor in that MOST people know they don't have the money to destroy their cars every few events---a serious damper for most reasonable sentient people...

The folly is that a overly aggressive driver in a 1990 Geo Metro can still smooosh a spectator pretty good at 35mph.

John, niday did many events over several years in vws and an old fiesta. niday's last golf was a high CR motor that ran on 105. his impreza was not that high dollar. It was shadbolt's old car. only had one crash in it.

Havir did dive right into awd turbo.

The engine in JB's car was pretty high dollar if I recall. Bored and stroked EJ22T to a 2.33 or so with 2.5 DOHC heads or something. I think it may have been one of the first Crawford products if I recall.

But yeah, I don't think either of them were thinking of themselves or their 'luck' with open class cars. In fact, I think the entire rule is a reactionary response to an event death. Wasn't it a codriver for a novice driver in a high dollar Subaru that wrecked? Codrivers family sued everyone from what I heard.
Ya'll ever heard of an actuary? You may 'think' that the evidence is not there but I'd guarantee at least one insurance company has had someone (the actuary) estimate the probability distributions of such things and there likely is, based upon past data, a significant effect of driving experience and horsepower.
The easiest way is to limit new comers to lower power car classes.
I personally think Open AWD should be eliminated all together and only Open Light and 2WD should exist. All are required to run on max 91 octane petrol. No E-85 or race gas.

Grant, I forgot about the motor he built after the 03 snowdrift wreck. The engine that was in it when I crewed for him was the old ej20 with legacy turbo wiring and ecu.

Ok so hi comp, big deal. What gearbox, what final drive? A high comp VW motor with a wide ratio box and the common 3.9 or OOoooo ahhh 4.2 final drive is not going to be a particularly scary fast car, a Fiesta would have been better called "Siesta". Hardly " a lot" of experience to make broad rules banning say a stock turbo Volvo or Xratty or Le-gassy as beginner cars.

Point is that the rules ignore the potential of a wealthy trustafarian building or buying a wicked spec GpH or F-cup car and posing every bit of potential danger as a turbo 4wd car.
Look at how long Blockie made it in his own Escort before stuffing it after 5 years of every national possible and Canadian events too: 42 seconds.

Somehow the other Sactioning bodies in north America manage to allow beginners to begin with whatever---even though we know they strongly advise against it.

Had a nice discussion with Mike earlier, and my request for Open Class exemption is going to be discussed with Niday, but he thinks that it will be denied for the fact that I don't have that much motorsports experience behind the wheel. He actually did mention you Chris, saying that they granted you the exemption mostly because you had a lot of track days under your belt. Mentioned that if I am able to find and do some track days within the next few months, or some events over the summer they would most likely grant me an exemption.

Unfortunately, there is not a single HDPE or track event ANYWHERE near me in Jonesboro, AR before early October. sad smiley

So looks like I might just start hunting for an RS engine to swap in.

Rally WV is next month and a short 12 hour drive.

It would probably satisfy RA's "seat time" request to get you an exemption, also.

It's a nights drive, but COMMA events at Hallett are cheap and it's the best track around (real elevation): http://www.hallettracing.net/comma.html

Congrats on the car!

Unfortunately. I will be in Buenos Aires from July 31st to August 26th. Maybe should look into some track days down there. tongue sticking out smiley

Wouldnt it be cheaper to just go to a NASA event and get experience than to swap engines?
