VW MK2 Shell for $1000?
June 27, 2011 03:31PM
86 mk2 shell. running but doesn't run good due to 'lectrics. Has a carb'd 8v of some sort and a "rollcage" Not real exciting to me other than as a solid shell with some spare pieces.

The rollcage looks not too hacky in celphone pics, but assumed useless until proven otherwise. Interior appears stripped and painted white.

thoughts?

pics forthcoming hopefully tonight.

No old SCCA/RA/CARS/NASA rally logbook then it most likely won't be rally legal. Assume the cage is scrap.

Is it white?

I wonder if it's a certain ex-Lemons car I know about.

Either way, $1000 for any Mk2 that has enough metal left to support a rollcage is a steal, even if you have to cut out the cage and start over.

Geez, I'm glad I don't live in the rust belt.

Either way, $300 for any Mk2 that has enough metal left to support a rollcage is a steal, even if you have to cut out the cage and start over.

They're hovering in the $2500-3500 range now, at least when I get The Itch. A lot of 'em are rusty, too...

Mk3s can be had sub-$1k easily, no idea of condition. But even the base models have a lot of the upgrade parts that you put in a Mk2 anyway.

that cage cant be even a little legal for anything. why would anyone build a cage with no rear stays from hoop to shock tower?

I have no cash and if I did, it would be shoved towards fuel/entrance for a shindig in Tulsa in October.

Makes you wonder what else on the car he's "fabricated". Because it's probably just as well thought out as that roll bar.

Brandon - Give the guy on OhioVW $250 for the A3 shell, then take it up to Ann Arbor and have a cage installed for $2500.

I'd be leery of fresh paint on any car with obviously rusted spots.

That cage sucks. It could possibly be salvaged, but it's got some weird things. As pointed out it's got no rear stays, just the X. It looks like the main hoop V-bars go to the crossbar, not the hoop itself. The doorbars are really far inboard, relatively speaking. No sillbar. Blah blah blah.

And it's got a horrid green valve-cover.

I know you live in the rust belt, but you'd be better off scheduling a vacation to AZ or CA or something, picking up a CL special there, and then having a nice pleasant drive home.

I thought that was an indicator of a tidily executed, well thought thru engine build, and the nicest thing on the car.
Go figure.
