Idaho is terrible for finding this engine. The only one from a ranger in The junkyard comp listings were 1200. I'll have to go out of state.

You could do what I plan to do... B-series engine. BPs and B6s are cheap from front-drives and they're the same everything but intake manifold and oil pans/pickups as the Miatas. Call it a stepping stone engine until you can run Group 5 and slap a turbo on the thing.

I found a buncha B6Ts locally, too. Be nice to have my 200hp and also get 35+mpg. And I already have the Miata transmission to bolt the engine to the driveshaft.

Good point on height..

As for short run, they began in 2001 pick ups---
when did they stop with Duratec in pick ups?

Wiki seems to indicate they are still current in some things:
The 23NS is built in Dearborn, Michigan for the Ford Ranger and North American market Mazda B-Series. These engines are tuned for torque-bias making them suitable for light-truck use and are not equipped with VVT or VICS. Output is 143 hp (107 kW) at 5250 rpm with 154 ft·lbf (209 N·m) of torque at 3750 rpm.

Applications:

* 23EW — FWD/AWD
o 2003–2007 Ford Focus
o 2005–2008 Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute[citation needed]
o 2005–2009 Ford Fusion

* 23NS — RWD
o 2001– Ford Ranger
o 2001– Mazda B-Series[citation needed]

EW means East West
NS is oddly North South

Good call John. I was going off of the Ford Racing catalog that has a listing of the dimensions of just about every motor ford has sold and the 2.3L motor was listed as end of life in 2007 time frame with the 2.5L replacing it for just about all of the transverse applications. However, I just checked the Ford new vehicle website and they have a picture of the Ranger engine bay with the 2.3L in it.

As for ITBs, you really do not need them right out the door, the motors were choked down for emissions, so just opening up the intake and exhuast will get you good power. If you read what the brits have to say about this power plant they seem to think low 200's is about the limit before you have to build a whole new motor. Anything more than a slightly warmed over cam requires new pistons, and bottom end cannot handle more than around 7,200 RPM. They suggest just do the bolt on type stuff run them until they blow and then replace it.

yea the B series is my backup since i have one possibly cheap. I would need a transmission. They make less power though and are a touch heavier and i already have a T5. So im going to see what pops up as far as a duratec goes. Worst case, the rally car will get a B 1.8 and the replacement rally car project will get a Duratec 23. Just contingent on time and money, (mostly time).

The turbo B would be a little bit more in cost since the turbo would hit the steering column (FWD turbo is downwards and towards the rear so i would need a different manifold.

early october well before mount hood. So if one pops up cheap soon and i have enough money, id like to grab it myself but the chances are low. Maybe you can work some magic since you have a a population base to buy and wreck rangers.

Really in Central California?
Doesn't say your real lcoation in your signature....which is odd cause that's the one thing that keeps this place civilised, that and a real name..

Wanna fix your location?

Sure, carve up the flange down to the size--and thickness ---desired, weld in a spigot turned to the Ford 2.5" OD, bang some holes in it, then send a wheel and I betcha I can invet something easy enough.

$700 is more than im looking for at the moment given, i would be better off finding one from a ranger due to the manifold and oil pan.

Alex, did you check the Jalopy jungle in Nampa? I didn't look under any hoods but I swear there was a newerish ranger out there last week. Call them, cause I could be off the proverbial rocker.
