I'm a CP Dealer and have built all kinds of turbo motors including Regionally winning Subie motor for Dave Hintz....
I would suggest a serious re-think about the design of the dish in the pistons.

I have seen piccies of WRC Subie stuff and it looked as i would expect; a nice quench band around the outer rim with a nice radiused dish.

Not so the production junk---and 99% of the "shelf-stock" aftermarket stuff...

I'd think hard. Mitigating detonation is the big priority so we can either a) be smrat or b) run moar bewst.

I presume you are thinking of replacing those rather flexible rods in there with something better?

I'd definately be tossing some Forged pistons into it...cheap insurance.

but give us more details...

useage? Goals?

what block? what heads? etc.

thats where it gets interesting I have a block that came from a 06 wrx limited with a set of bugeye heads I kinda need to try to run a NA setup as I have no coefficents so I was thinking about just ditching the turbo and building a exhaust pipe to bypass it untill I am able to run it I just want to get out and tear up some 2 lane dirt roads

I didnt know there wasd much issue with them I found a set of manleys for 322 plus ship. If I remember right the shop rally car was a stock bottom end and it finished consistantly I may just start building one of the donor blocks I have up and just run this as is for now

Tough call.

Ideally to run N/A, you'd want to up the compression to like 11:1 (which are available). Problem comes when you go to turbo, you will be married to race gas or E-85 with that much compression. You'll also need some really good engine management to keep it in check, not to mention a good tuner.

You may well be better off to find an N/A bottom end, and monster it together with some heads, and run that while you need to be N/A. You don't need forged stuff for N/A.

I would definately suggest putting some Forged pistons in your turbo motor when you do that. You can find pistons cheap enough...really doesn't matter if they are Wiseco, CP, JE, Cosworth, Mahle, or Maney they are all better than stock and give you some insurance you won't break ring lands.

Rods....for the price of them, while you are in there I would. The OEM rods are proven ok at your likely power levels, but the aftermarket stuff in an improvement. For $300 it's dumb not too.

In 2000 I was around various Cosworth shops in UK and some did Subie and Misterbitchy too. Collins, Burtons, Goode, Taylor, Mikeanics etc.
Collins particularly since that where I was staying..
ALL pointed out that it was possible to bend the rods with stock turbo..

So I zero in on the "possible' and say "OK possible---but how common in the real world? and we walk over to the bench and look at 3 opened up motors all with bent rods..

The Manleys are fine, they made in the same factory in Western China as my Soooper Bitchin Volvo rods...same as Scat, and several other name brand.

Sure is a bitch having to screw with this different motor rule....so arbitrary and so proven not to work.

What are you planning to do with the car?
You can pick up a decent 2.2 for $200-300 complete. If the car was a 1.8 you can run the 2.2 bottom end with the 1.8 intake manifold and not have to change anything.
This thread reminds me of why I hate Subarus. The expense gets insane when you start wanting to be competitive. Mitch Williams is going for the USRC again after winning Idaho. Their Cosworth engine is done after Idaho. They pulled another Cossie engine out of Ty's street car. The other option involved around $7k dollars.
If you're going open, I highly suggest never tallying all the money you've spent. You'll be surprised how quickly it approaches or exceeds $40-50k.
My suggestion would be to look into making a sweet 2.5 NA. Troy's daily (Suba Performance) up until a few weeks ago was a built 2.5 making well over 200 hp. Open Light is the place to be.

done all three setups. if you are going 2.2 on a 1.8 car its worth the gain of the 2.2 intake. swap over the 1.8 wiring, switch one plug and get the 2.2 throttle cable.

it will take an "o" out of the sloooow.

18 on top 22 on bottom

Yeah, but you can get a 2.2 bottom end for $125 here. Add the intake mani and such and you're at $200+ usually. You also get slightly better gas mileage with the 1.8 manifold, which doesn't matter one bit.
Say, what're you doing with the old interior? Do you have it? Is it nice? Dave's convinced me so I've decided I'm going to replace some interior bits of my Impreza and sell it and buy myself a 325 or 328 for a daily and eventual rally build.
