Seems like it'd be kinda annoying to try to drive one handed and rest your other hand on the shifter with that.
Yeah, lots of LFBing for sure in that video.

WTF. The thing just goes up and down? How do you know what gear you're in? Or is it a two speed? But then why would it be so fun to say, three on da tree.

It takes a little getting used to, but I admit I kinda dig the column shift on a 96, even though getting the damn thing into reverse was more an exercise in luck than skill. But I can see how nice it can be zooming down the road with the shift so close to the wheel. If it sucked, they wouldn't have been using the $300,000 version of the technology on WRC cars...

I learned to drive on a column-shift car. '59 Mercedes-Benz 190D. 3500lbs, maybe 50hp. Talk about having to learn to use momentum.

The column shift had so many links and swivels that it made a Golf's look simple.

Then there was the Rambler American, whose column shift rods had a tendency to intertwine and lock up if you tried to shift too fast. No biggee - just get out, open the hood, and pop them apart again - but it'd be hard to do on a rally stage.

The Saab 4 on the tree has 2 high quality u-joints to make the turn to go into the top of the gearbox. With a good u-joint the movement is quicker than sheeeut, even faster with the nice real close ratio gears....

Just spread your fingers to make a downshift while braking hard.....

I'd think the 3-2 and 3-4 shifts would be tricky and possibly get mixed up.
I'd also be inclined to think (if I could be bothered to) that one would use a shorter 'throw' version that didn't risk knuckles being busted on either the dash bar or your knee while shifting.

Dare you to try it out next time you come over, almost as good as a Miata..
The guy in the piccie has a sloppy u-joint. MOST get sloppy after 40 years.
Funny thing is the shaft the u-joint sits on is 'merikanski 5/8" so decent u-joints are all over the place for cheap.

No more chance of flubbing shifts than any normal shifter--and at least this one is right at the wheel....

But did you boys notice the speed in the vid?
That guy was flying!

And sure seems sideways often enough, no understeering pig like so many faux wheel drivel.

My flatfender Willys has a column shift. I also remember using one on an F-150 2wd on the farm i worked at when I was 15.

My first car, a 1965 Chevy II was 3spd column shift. You could shift that car lightning fast! Just hold slight pressure under the lever in 1st, and stab the clutch sliding your foot off at the bottom, and wham, it was in second. Good times.....

My grandfather's Simca 1300 had a column shifter.
Wasnt too bad at all, still the same H pattern as in all 4spd cars at the time.
1-3
2-4-R

At least column shiftger were better than the POS the Citroens had in the 2VC and Dyane! I remember bustin my knuckles on the freakin amp gauge on a quick 2>3 shift... Quelle merde!

Yeah I borrowed a 2CV once in France---hooooooly sheet figuring out that!!
It was bad, but, in a way, not horrible. Umbrella handle sticking straight horisontal outta the dash.....how appropriate when they did the Clio with sequential in the same place!
