Why a pod?

I tend to eat bumpers, so I just want something thats up and out of the way.

and just to piss off JVL.....I want the pods because they cost more and look wayyyy cooler and I'll get more pooty-tang with them on when I go buy groceries w/the rally car at Trader Schmoe's.

LoL my gf worked at trader joes. Trader joes chicks will like you more if you have a cool light pod , that's for sure!

i'm close to getting both in and out of car video of a night stage uploaded (its processed but it errored out last night uploading while i slept)

here's what my lights do. not the best, my driving lights should have been aimed to the sides of my normal head lights with my pencils just above the head lights...

We are using the Hella 700ff($70) driving lights with a pair of Hella ralle 4000 fog lamps(round $400 kit). Swapped in the ultra bright Sylvania Silver stars($49 pair) in the stock headlights. Have one fog light aimed little high and other low. Tons of light and little amp draw. Could actually go with one fog and one pencil 4000 if need to.

So I've been shopping around for lights and have a quick question. I'm using a light pod on the BMW.

Most lights look like they've got pivoting mounts at the bottom of the light. The only light I've seen that has some sort of bracket that looks like it'll bolt up to a pod is this one:

Based on recommendations from Pete, I'm thinking about doing the Piaa XT 80s but don't really see how I'm supposed to mount them to the pods. Who sells those mounting rings and/or what are they actually called.

Oh - and if I'm buying 4 pod lights, what's the recommended configuration in terms of which lights to buy? The headlights are HIDs with halogen high beams and when the high beams are on, all 4 bulbs are lit up. Options for the XT 80s are:

Pencil - 5 degree
Driving - 20 degree
Fog - 95 degree

Any help appreciated!

Dave- Paul Eklund sells both the lights and rings for PIAA stuff (as well as pods). I think Pete Lahm also sells KC HiLite stuff (which was a very close 2nd option when we were shopping). The Hellas are nice, too and I think Susquehanna either had some rings, or could get them.

Finding the rings definitely isn't trivial, though. And at least the PIAA's that I bought did not come with the swivel mount thing on the bottom, so I didn't have to remove that for pod mounting.

Thanks Doug! Picked up a BMW specific pod from the guys who do lots of Compact's in GB, so that should be arriving in about a week if all goes well...along with some other bits that'll find their way onto the car next year.

Hey guys - more questions:

Got an email pack from Paul super quick and he gave me a few options for the Piaa lights.

Option 1 which he said was a commonly recommended setup:

2 of the 80 Pro lights 8.00" 95/135w driving beams
2 of the XT80 lights ~6.75" 120w pencil beams

Option 2 if I want more light:

2 of the 80 Pro lights 8.00" 95/135w driving beams
2 of the big 80 lights 8.00" 95/135w pencil beams

Cost isn't much of a determining factor as the 8.00" lights are only about $30 more than the 6.75" lights, so ~$60 total cost differential.

Power draw would be greatest on the four 8" lights if set on high, but with options of low beams, this setup seems more flexible.

Seems to me like if the pod is big enough to support four 8" lights, that would be the no-brainer solution since it'll be more light...or does the smaller pencil beam reflector actually work better than a larger one?

What do you guys think/recommend?

Screw pencil, never seen a pencil beam that lit up anything I needed to know about.
I REALLY don't need to see things 2,700 feet away.

Poor advice----as I have come to expect.
4 "drive' lights arrayed to cover a sweeping area for sideways type cars.

Be very careful about the quality of the hardware suppled for mounting. Roadrace Engineering used to sell utter junk for absurdly high prices.

Ok, so I got some quotes on different lights and its time to make a decision. If you were choosing between the 80 Racing and 80XT lights, which would you go with and why?

80 Racing (8" + H4 bulbs (bigger and 135/90w beam))
80XT (6.75" H3 120w bulbs)

The bigger lights are ~$30 more each once lights & mounts are factored in.

I like the ones with the hi/lo option because you can dim them a bit depending on conditions (like dust or snow).
