MK3 2.0 or MK3 "Plus"?

Torque spec for 2.0 suspension is 195 ft-lbs.

Or "jump up and down on breaker bar with 36mm socket tight." Almost as tight as a 914, which is a socket breaker.

Out here VWs snapping off the splined end of the CV is common as dogsheeeet on the lawn. Too common. It is a major reason I push RWD stuff so hard.

I've done it twice, both with the same brand of new axles. Switched back to GKN/Lobros and haven't done it since. I think Wimpeys had a similiar experience.

Since say 1987 we've had the 2 Hartmans Scott and Kurt, Bottles and now Buress ALL repeatedly break the spline part that pokes thru the hub...
About 25 years. OEM, cheap aftermarket---which are also GKN since they make EVERYBODY's CVs, new, used, whatever ALL randomly break..

It really seems to be no rhyme of reason to it except simple underdimesnioned..

One has to assume that at least some of them had correctly torqued the nut.

Meanwhile in Sweden, the vastly superior Saab 96 CV and hub has never even hinted at any kind of problem except a gummidamask---boot-- getting rock dings which I would sucessfully repair using BrakeKleen and a drop or 2 of SuperGlue.

is it time for "meanwhile in Sweden" again?

Broke one axle at the splines once and it was a brand new fancy Raxles unit with cro-mo shafts and whatnot. Never again--went back to cheap old EMPIs. Torque nuts to 180 or 190 at least once per day of rally.

When I pulled it apart, the nut was in fact loose. Lesson learned on that one. Luckily, I've got a press and it only takes about an hour to do the job. New bearings are in and it's back to the pavement (for now anyways...).
