Interior pictures/ideas
September 13, 2011 11:09PM
Hello Boys and Girls.

I'm making a new thread 'cause best I could tell (with a quick parooze of this sites search and google) there isnt too much info on how/what to do with the various crap behind the dash.

I Just tore my dash out today, and while I am sure I could make some set up that would work, There has to be plenty of tried and cheap true ideas on what should go where.

Also, Al, Would you be kind enough to post of a pic of your Volvo's interior, If you have one handy?

Why do you need a dash?

The necessary stuff was put on the floor in between the seats and the unnecessary got disposed of.

I personally don't see the reasioning behind removing the dash in a rally car. First time you can't see because the windows are all fgogged up and your crappy "heater" solution does not work you will kick yourself.

On the Volvo the defroster vents are pretty much unchanged with or without a dash. Most of the other vents as well. I think a dash bar would clear the HUGE heater fan in it as well. I figured Id gut the dash and put it back in around everything once I was caged.

I removed it all to simplfy the harness and other crap, with intent to make it work later with less. If this is NOT how most do it, Well good thing I made this thread, and please, post up a picture or two if you have them so I can see how its done.

Makes more sense. my dash is gutted, and only there to support the Cluster and the vents. I wired the car from scratch, and it is all pretty low in the car. Don't know if I have any pictures. My fuse holder is on the tunnel just in front of the shifter.

Yeah, keep the dash around while you place the dash bar. Keep the heater blower for sure, ditch the ducts and make ones that just feed the defrost thingies from dryer hose. I got a aftermarket heater box from summit, its smaller and the original didnt work.

You want to keep the dash for glare in the windshield, use flat black krylon or the pimp suede dust flocking depending on your style. When I first got the car together I drove it around for a while without the dash and it was odd feeling. Iorio had his trick sube with a piece of black fabric instead of a dash...

I'll post some pics, I keep saying that. My stuff is pretty rough.

No dash would just look like shit too. Wires and junk hanging out. It's not a rat rod man!

I gutted mine, ditched the a/c equipment, took lots of metal plates out and such. It weighs far less now, and I got the Donjer flocking kit. I highly recommend that. NO glare. None.

Every time i see a flocked dash, I think to myself "Oooh, Looks like someone glued some felt on here". But what do I know.

Thanks for the ideas gentlemen. alkun, What do you mean by heater box: the core, or the vent shroud? And your pictures would be greatly appreciated whenver they would arrive.

maybe you were looking at my car. sure flocking looks nice but felt and glue costs 10 bucks and does the same thing. maybe one of these days I will do it right.

my approach was to take out all the brackets and stuff that aren't really needed, pull most of the ducting out with only defrost. 2 bolts and a couple of zip ties and the dash comes right out.

I still have nitemares over Al's dash. A couple days before his first event the car shows up at my shop with the windshield badly fractured. The dash missing, the heater box laying in the CoDs foot well, wires and bungy cords everywhere. Looked like someone tossed a grenade in a dumpster behind Safeway....

I gave it a logbook but remember telling Hurst about it and proclaiming he had no chance of making the event ( I was wrong again). Should have taken a pic...
