Glare is the enemy, it can be real annoying in traffic, but potentially downright dangerous in the woods. Vision is the first defense line before you brain can begin to decide anything. And its not JUST the glare on the screen obscuring say a puddle in what might be a braking zone---it's simply distracting, and anything which distracts our poor widdle overtaxed, inexperienced noodles is bad.. You don't like the "felt", then get some gen-you-whine premium quality imitation suede. That would be in a complicated way especially appropriate for your car. Suede is the French word for Sweden, it's one of those words that becomes the general the for a type of leather tanned a certain way in the (still) small town of Malung up in Darlarna Province (Dal rhymes with 'tall' is cognate to 'dale' in English and 'val' in French from which we get ''vall-ie'') So originally it was called "Swedish leather" then just "swedish" or suede. So since youse gots a Suedoise car, put suede on the dash. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Oh it extends to the language used to swear at the things when fighting with some 'brilliant" idea. I get down to swearing at the parts in country of origin, so a German part on a Swedish car gets called all manner of vile German, while the "injur-near" who chose or buried the part gets his manlihood and ancestry and culture ripped apart in Swedish...malheuresement my swearing is limited to the major westernern European langues, plus Finnish. Might be why I don't work on Japonaise stufff too awfully much. My favorite is the painted a-pillar bars. I've never understood the need to paint those flat black, at least not for me. Then again, I don't care about repetitively cleaning the windshield. Once I'm moving, I have little focus on anything other than the road.
On the other hand... Removing the windshield completely, I fully endorse that option. ![]() |

John, I was saying that felt seems like a perfect cheap option instead of the flocking stuffs.
But tell ya what, If I stumble on some suede, ill glue that crap on just for you ![]() Kevin, That looks pretty sweet, And its cool how easy it comes out. Thanks for the piktur |

It's real easy to do durable felt or Gen-you-whine imitation Suede. Drap the stuff on and anywhere there seems to be a big wrinkle you need a "dart" kinda like wimmiz clothing when they fold and overlap to accommodate shall we see their "gazoombazs". If your not familiar just ask any particularly "amply" endowed woman if you can look how their blouse is made, but ask first!!! Don't be the typical rallyanarchisto and just sneak up like on the subway and just start staring! Ask nicely "Excuse me ma'am I am covering the dash of my Soooper Bitchin Volvo 240 rally car with felt or alcantra to minimize potentially dangerous glare on the windshield, but I've never sewn cloth things before and am having trouble seeing hows I'm spossed to accommodate large bulges like the speedo and center console, and I could not help myself from notice what a nice pair of__________________ (be polite, don't say tits or Knockers, that'll get you punched--use some more polite like gazoombas , you're Italian, they'll understand) May I be premitted to examine the darts and gussets in your nice blouse?" And wait till they answer yes, don't just start pawing! they'll think you have ulterior motives and are a common perv. Play it right and all 100% proper and you will learn how to do darts and gussets and you might just have some fun to. To barrow a line from your brilliant countryman Roberto Benigni, it could lead to BA BOOM BA BOOM BA BOOM! Glad I could help Ah here's that suave guy now ![]() Here's he's splaining"Oh that's one fantastic blouse look at those darts Ai mama dio!" ![]() What the hell this is just too good, and somehow I'm sure its helpful! Gotta see the second half! John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Here is our setup. Fire resistant cloth, fiberglass rod, velcro. Removable in 2 seconds, soft, light, has given us no troubles.
I'd have liked to have retained the stock heater, but the cage interfered too much with the mounting points. We did run it for a while, but it just couldn't get it to mount properly. Went with an aftermarket heater that throws some serious heat has a bitchin fan. My only complaint is we have defrost only, and at Big White, our feet got awful cold after a while (especially when wet). Coulda sworn I had a photo of the heater setup, but I guess not... Can kinda see it in the above photo. I don't like dashes, but I don't like exposed crap. We went best of both worlds (IMHO). Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/16/2011 01:01AM by krisdahl. |

Anne, I saw your pm and thought FOR SURE it was spam... Now I know better. I think that idea is too good to let pass
![]() John, Suede, or... Kris- That looks excellent, really squared away. The doors have some fabric snapped on eh? I think I will steal that idea. And I really dig the reflective tape, thats smart. I see the whole center console was fabbed, is that the fuse block in the lower right corner? What is supporting your steering column? What are the yellow wires running under the sill bar on the drivers side, tailights/etc? Luckly, with the 240 it LOOKS like the heater, though huge, would be low enough to clear a dash bar. Dont really know, though. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/16/2011 06:07AM by BobOfTheFuture. |

Hey! To be fair at tha point it looked like a grenade had gone off in the dumpster behind Ace hardware. It wasn't until after the rally that it was full of cigi butts and Starburst wrappers. At the last rally I thought I had it all worked out, but when I rolled into tech and turned on the headlights, the wipers started going... |

benigni - priceless - split my sides!!
One thing I found - at least w/illuminated gauges - they'll reflect off the windscreen. I've had to re-work mine so that they are either recessed enough or have a shelf above them to block light at night... I'll put a pic up when done... |

In our Colt the dash was yanked and two cross bars welded in. Covered the bars in sheet of metal then cut holes for gauges and such. Previous owner had rewired the fuse box to the center console. Liked the extra room in the cab. There was room to install the factory heater box. There wasn't much glare. Sorry about picture sizem still playing the trying to get downsized.

Same fabric for the doors, had my mom sew them up with reflective tape used from fire-fighter uniforms. Satisfies the door covering rule, no sharp edges, is light and easy to remove. Primary fuse block is the square thing under the kill switch. The console mounted to the exhaust tunnel is a switch panel for the fans, heater, lights, etc. I think it actually has integrated fuses as well. All marine stuff from Blue Sea (they make good quality stuff, better than 'racing' crap you get from Longacre, etc.) Steering column is supported by factory mount point, which is welded to the dash bar... We actually put a steering quickener in place of the stock column. Yellow lines are the brake and fuel lines. I actually should consider covering them somehow incase they break from impact... just to keep the stuff from spraying everywhere. |
