lil project on the rainy day...

came up on some stuff and started to play.

roached the calibration of the gauge, modifying it to fit but at least i got a good test fit...now just for a cleaner execution with a calibrated gauge and a Dave Barton face in R-sport flair.

So it's gonna go down like I said, 740 turbo gauge, trimmed to fit the early 240 clock housing, and tastefully modified by Dave Barton with a graduated gauge face to match my R-Sport cluster

Coming soon.....

Thanks again Dave!!!!!!

Well, it's been a rather busy two weeks in lew of the holiday season; record days, everyday at the rack shop!

I haven't had a whole lot of time to work Honey-D, just been so busy with work and life and home projects. Took the 242 out today...had a lil hiking date this morning, and while waiting on the gurrrl, I found another 242 to park next to...

So, what's been keeping me so busy at the rack shop? How about a limited run, DINAN S2 BMW M5!!!

Read more about it here...

http://www.europeancarweb.com/tuned/0402ec_bmw_dinan_s2_m5/index.html";]http://www.europeancarweb.com/tuned/0402ec_bmw_dinan_s2_m5/index.html

A customer wanted a unique approach to mounting bike trays to his roof, so I offered my custom track system. 16 holes in his roof later, he had custom track from Thule, their 430r base towers, 47" rapid aero bars and a pair of Echelon trays...all keyed alike and a Rack-N-Road surf pad as a minimalist alternative to a fairing. Beautiful car and certainly the fastest and most powerful car I've ever driven!

The whole job took me about 4 hours...really took my time, measuring 5, 6, 7 times as you only really get one shot at getting a track install right. Most exclusive car I've done before has been a new Range Rover, though at the shop, we often get brand new Audi's, BMW's, Benz's and Volvo's straight from the broker for a custom installation before delivery to the broker's clients. I don't do track installs too often, so it was such an honor to get to work on such a rare and exclusive vehicle.

just got back from the shop...put on the 15" uglies with 205 tires...Tahoe Bound in the AM...the hydras wouldn't clear with snow chains, so the .5" narrower wheel and 30mm narrower tire was all i needed to get my sweet Thule CB10 chains on. Also got the ski rack on and drilled out the GT bumper for my fogs...though I don't have the pigtail for my switch, so couldn't actually give them power...damn! Figure they're safer on the car than poorly placed in my messy, messy garage.

pics coming of my 242 in the fluffy white powder!

I'm luvin da spoolin...

I ain't foolin...

Big turbos got me droolin,

but I thought I'd first add a lil moar coolin....

Picked up this nifty drop in replacement intercooler; it's an Isuzu NPR intercooler.

Supposed to just drop in, after I finish grinding off the mounting tabs.

She ain't so light, so I'll certainly appreciate a battery relocation, lolz.

Dave and I had a little fun with shocks today.

Swapped over my Bilstein HD rears to his '86 245, from my whip,

and replaced them with the Chevy S10 front shocks.

got to take every precaution when jacking these vehicles.

the old setup, now in dave's car

dave's old setup

height comparison of 240 billy vs S10 billy...S10 is the shorty.

s10 billy fitted properly in my '79, using three slim washers on the inside, lower eyelet.

Dave's new beauties.

it's amazing just what a difference damping makes. it's obvious, in the first 100 yards, that the stiffer valved s10 shocks are better suited for spirited driving. my car's rear, in every respect, feels better and more alive!

what a great swap!

It's been all work and no play for a few weeks...worked endlessly and didn't have a moment to address some much needed issues on my, daily driven, 242.

I saved up some days and took three days off to play catch up; may not seem like a vacation, but now there's just so much less stress on my mind, when I've got to actually use the car.

I did my swap in a hurry, as you all saw, and left a lot of loose ends, due to time, money and skill set, so off to see The Wizard of The Valley!

Spent three days in The Valley getting Honey-D up to speed..

Day 1: PnP Run!
• '92 244 complete a/c change-over
 • 240 CAM Power Steering Rack w/ sector shaft and pump w/ integrated fluid reserve
 • 264 anodized aluminum Commando Bumpers
Day 2: Disassembled what needed to be disassembled in my 242, then started mounting the goods...got everything in, just needed to wire it up and run the lines, and fit the engine bay pieces. Removed my engine harness, because there was a short, it wasn't wrapped and hand burned out half a dozen wires.

Day 3: Wrapped it all up...got the A/C system in, ran the new heater core, filled the p/s system, repaired, rewrapped and reinstalled the harness...and because of the late model firewall plate, my computers are now, properly in the passenger floorwell...properly mounted to brackets. Got in a new sound system, about 600 watts and a 10" in the trunk, with some nice Infiniti 4" speakers in the doors! All good now baby!

So here's a few pics after today...Mounted up all three components to my SAAB APC system...waiting on a custom knocksense style harness, but now have a home for the 3-way valve, where the Turbo + valve would be, installed the Pressure Transducer by the brake m/c...hopefully it will clear a hydraulic clutch master cylinder, and positioned the APC control box where the Chrysler ignition box would be.

for clearance, better wire routing and servicability, I installed the 3-way valve using the SAAB bracket, flipped upside down, and then reinstalled the nuts and screws that hold the valve to the plate upside down, so one can still access them with a Torx driver from above.

Also put on my cool, BMW coil boot...

Fit in some 242 love this evening...

Gave her a bath, lightly cleaned the engine bay and swapped over a pair of GT firewall braces.

Just got back from my shop for a few more details...

Rattle canned my GT front air dam, with flat black Rustoleum...came out very smooth and even, with no runs...

Also sprayed my one paintless butt cheek.

Finished my custom R-Sport graduated turbo boost gauge...write up coming soon.

Didn't get any pictures of the clean car, clean engine bay with gt braces, or of my paint work...for tomorrow, but here's my new gauge with a finally functional backlight...

I've still got to paint the needle white, to be authentic, but this works for now.

GUESS WHO'S BACK......

.....
..........
...............

Spent all morning in the wood shed, with a heat gun and a sledge hammer, straightening the two bends...

Pics from before...

Spent the rest of the day cleaning, and applying Jasco stripper on the machined rim surface, to strip the thick clear coat. Spent some time working my way up on the hierarchy of sand paper to restore the machined lip finish. Masked and painted the centers metallic silver.

To say the least, I'm very pleased.

Just a little touch up in the morning, before taking off the tape and stretching on some rubber.

Stuffing 225's on 7.5" et18 wheels is harder than I thought, ditched the 1-1/4" spacers on the rear and moved the 1" spacers from the front to the rear...looks, sits and rides proper now!

Also managed to mount the 740ti charcoal canister on the late 240 bracket I mounted Sunday...A stop to the parts house for some vacuum line and I'll be swapped, with room for my turbo air box!

Take that, SMOG Reffs...

A factory Volvo 240 Turbo air box. Removed the fuel dizzy (see FS section) plugged the holes, relocated my charcoal canister and dropped in a K&N air filter.

Feels better, sounds better and looks a lot better!

Must be better.

PS, see For Sale section for my cone filter!

I've just got to say thanks to Josh at YoshiFab...

I thought about being a cheap ass MoFo and getting my neighbor/fabricator to make me some boxing plates,

But with his computer cut, to Volvo specifications, 16-gauge boxing plates, it was really, really difficult to say no.

I ordered them and had them within a week, and now they are out, along with my control arms and trailing arms, for bead blasting and welding.

Going to hit them with Rustoleum semi-flat, before pressing in my SuperPro polyurethane bushings and fitting them to the 242...

Decided the chassis will be the focus of my attention, until it's done.

So brakes and suspension are hogging all my attention, and $$$

So, I ordered some coil over kits from Coleman Racing, to accompany my SAAB 9.3 Bilstein HD short strut, coil-over conversion...

http://www.colemanracing.com/Coil-Over-Kit-P4566.aspx";]http://www.colemanracing.com/Coil-Over-Kit-P4566.aspx

They'll go off to the machine shop to have the struts shortened 5.70cm and these welded on.

I'm still on the hunt for a pair of SAAB 9.3 Bilstein HD struts.

So dig this...

The guy at the motorcycle shop next door to my rack shop, just got an '83 242 DL...just like mine, just with a formal hood and grill.

Got a little excited on lunch, so we parked em down the street and snapped a couple quickies...
