News...you want news!
Since I'm back, I haven't really had the opportunity to remain as much of a post and picture whore as I have been. I was bitching about my front end the whole trip, so I made some time to install my new tie rods, ends and ball joints and get the toe adjusted. Feels a lot better...though in the past few weeks, I heard something else knocking in the front end, and discovered my front bearings were a lil loose, so addressed that....now she's feelin' solid!!!!! I really want to do B230FT swap with some LH 2.4 and oil squirters, so saving my pennies and scouring for a proper 940 turbo donor. In the next couple months, I'm going to address my control arms and trailing arms by boxing them and fitting them with my poly bushings. I purchased core control arms, so I could box them and fit them with poly and not have my car out of commission during that time, but my neighbor, the fabricator, accidentally scrapped them...damn! Looks like we'll now just have to bust it all out at once. I hated the stock 240 seats from the first time I sat in one, so was quite excited when I was gifted the Momo buckets....though my patience has worn thin for them...they don't recline, so getting access to the rear seats is quite an adventure, and street side show! As far as lateral support, I can't complain but could do with a lot less on a daily use vehicle, and I've just got too bony of an ass for these things...I felt like I had just completed a century by the time I got home from CO! Today, I went junking, to solve my seat issues. I can't justify spending what it would cost for high end seats, so decided I can learn how to work with something OEM...off to Pick'n'Pull. The first yard had nothing....I had decided though, it would be best to find a 2-door Japanese car with manual seats. My logic was that a 2-door car would have seats with quick fold-forward mechanisms for access to the back, and that usually, Japanese car seats are light and comfy. I made a trip further to Oakland and got distracted by a late model front air dam that I traded to Butterfly_Brake_Checker, to get my GT air dam back...and I scored a 940 front lip...I guess I'm going to somehow mod it to hang off the GT air dam. Back to seats...I went back into the yard, after paying for the air dam and lower lip. With my burrito in one hand and my tool box in the other, I started walking the rows of Japanese cars. I came across a gray early '90s Honda Accord 2-door. The interior was almost a perfect match brown to my '79 242!!! The interior was in pretty nice shape, so I grabbed the front seats. While I was in the car, I got to thinking just how cool it would be to have a matching rear bench, and that I really liked the contours of the rear bench in the Accord. So I pulled the rear to. I carted everything down to the euro section and cross examined the components with the 240's in the yard. With just a custom base plate, I'll be able to mate the Accord front seats to my 240, using the Honda tracks...As for dimensions, width and height of the Accord seat are quite similar to that of the 240's. The rear lower cushion matches the footprint of the 240's almost perfectly; however the rear back cushion was too narrow. Back to the yard, where I found a same generation Accord, but a sedan, with the same color interior. The rear seat has a center arm rest, and is wider by way of being in three pieces...the rear back and a pad on either side that's about 3-4" wide. Together, the sedan rear back configuration was the width I need! I'm going to make a plate bracket for the front seats tomorrow night, and hopefully I can get to the rear soon....242 interior is going to be sick! On the way home, I stopped at Redwood_Chair's to sport the loot, and helped another Volvo owner swap out his 15" multi-x's for his steelies so he could get some fresh treads for the Multi-X's Seat Pics... Oh, and thanks for the comments on my dog...He's a really rad dude! |
Pics of seats...
![]() ![]() ![]() RX7 Calipers :-D ![]() Wiring, starting with 740t ignition; this should all just tie into a lh2.2 240 fuel harness? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() here's the 740t fuel harness... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't really understand why I just can't use this 740t fuel harness...seems like at least five wires are color matched between the two, so I can connect those, and the rest'll tie into the 240's dash harness...right? What a day and night...and i'm not even half way done!!!
So, based upon the previous pics posted, I've pulled out my old B21F and all associated electrical, and am finishing my prep of the B230FT before swapping it in with it's associated electrical. I'm currently held up on the intermediate shaft swap...got it transfered but it's not spinning...I don't think I've properly seated the oil pump gear. I lifted it to get the crank out and am afraid to hit it back down...do I need to use a mallot or is my gentle touch enough? I've also got to get the guide sleeve out and it's going to be a bitch considering Kragen doesn't have the tool for rent. Provided I can get through this, it should be smooth sailing for a few hours, installing the clutch and transmission and dropping the powerplant back in on some fresh rubber mounts. More pics, just to keep your interest, |

A lil bit closer
K, so I got the front crank seal in, timing belt done and the motor's all back together. I put the radiator and intercooler in but I'll need some longer bolts to get the top brackets to fit...and the shroud doesn't line up with the fan properly, they rub. I've also got to do something about the cone filter...there isn't much room by the radiator overflow and windshield wash bottle. |
It was a day off on a count of getting food poisoning this weekend; couldn't sit around and mope, so Redwood_Chair came to the rescue and we were goin huntin!
It started with a quick visit to Carlo's to take the last remains off the 164 and so redwood could cut up the ES...we were out in 20, with time to spare! Cruised on over to Oakland for a quick check on the new shipment and for me to get some last bits for the B230FT swap. Scanning the rows, I got held up by the homie in need of some tools...forgot to bring the proper stuff to PNP as he attempted to pull rear shocks off the e30 in sandals  Redwood_Chair told me to hang back and wait for the tools, while he went and hunted. I get done about 10 minutes later and start cruising toward the back row, where they had parked the 77 245 dl. it hadn't been there more than but a week. Redwood_Chair was chillin in the driver seat as I came around the passenger side and he said, dude score! I look down to find a mint...i mean flawless! early style complete dash.... got some of the Diamond Polish spray soaking on it now to help hydrate the coating. gonna revive the surfaces really well and get it in...got a clean glove box and dash stuff too... But Redwood_Chair's big long arms were too much in the way, to block me from the double bonus...cuz this score gets better... Starting to feel a whole lot better! |
Starting to sort out the '87 740ti EZK ignition harness...
Followed this write-up, so far...http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=129382";]http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=129382 I have left, two wires between the power-pack and the EZK, a gray lead and a brown, which has a t'd tail for ground? thought it was supposed to be positive... At the EZK, I should only have 7 leads, no? solid blue (positive terminal on coil) thick gray (powerstage connector) brown (powerstage connector, EZK, and ground) orange (connector under intake) gray/yellow stripe (connector under intake) thick black (hall sensor on distributor) thick green (knock sensor on side of block under intake) can I unpin all the other connections? At the power-pak I've got the brown lead and the gray lead, previously discussed...goes to EZK. There's the blue lead which'll go to the (+) on my coil and the thick white/red which'll go to the (-) on the coil and the thin white/red for my tach? Fuel Harness explored...
got the brain...a dohikey that plugs to itself? a three wire connecter, yellow/red fuel pumps?) red and red/black...went across the dash in '88 244. Then the fuel system relay... o2 sensors... firewall connector, for starter, amp meter, oil sender and temp sender... 4 injector leads, two grounds, and a temp sender...looks like the oil sender snuck in the pic too... TPS and that other thing...IAC? alt and oil... test connector and power....25a fuse holder get rid of the two unneeded pins and leads... a happy marriage... I ran the four wires to the corresponding pin numbers on the LH2.2 pin connector...only variances...on the LH harness, the gray/yellow wire was gray. dunno if it means anything, but the lead that goes to the 24 connector on the lh box...there wasn't anything there before, so the lead i gave it from the EZK is all new. So what are the three leads off the pigtail for? Now what, with this? where do i get 12v for the EZK? |
and we're one step closer...I've at least now got power to the injectors.
forgot to power the #18 connector on the ECU...the red/black lead to that 3-pin connector with the lead to the fuel pumps. she cranks but doesn't turn over...wondering if my injector sequence is off? terminal 2 might be on 3 and terminal 4 might be on 1. |
Well, there's not much that sounds better than an open exhaust on a B230FT roaring from my '79 242; SHE RUNS!!!
It took all day, but every step revealed a little more progress, keeping me motivated to grind through. After realizing that I had neglected to make two critical power connections, I finally got power to the injectors, but it still wasn't cranking over. I sucked it up and extended the six leads to the AMM, using the length of wire and AMM connector off the 745T harness...voiala! She was cranking but barely choking to stay running...had to keep squeezing the throttle and advance the dizzy as much as possible. Figured I must have timed the engine improperly, so removed the timing cover for a close inspection...took it off, measured twice and now we're certain it's on right. So last night, I reinstalled the new 240 LH harness, but didn't yet wire in my resistor pack. I had been told, early in this swap, that I could use FWD 850T injectors, as they are the high impedance injectors that will flow properly and not require a resistor pack. I have a set of browntop injectors I got from an 850T, so put them in...only to find out they flow only 19lbs per hour...I need something closer to 33...right? Swapped back to the original greentops and now she holds an idle! I'm relieved to know it's all together right and I'll be able to drive it out of the shop. Redwood checked out my clutch cable concern, and now he's worried that I possibly have the improper throw-out bearing on...I was having issues tensioning it as I couldn't get the threaded plastic to spin free of the cable housing...it's frozen in position...guess it's time for a new cable. There's a lotta slack in the cable, as I couldn't tension it at all...he seems to think the throwout fork is bottoming out before the throwout bearing touches the pressure plate. Guess I'll have to change my cable and see. Hope I won't have to drop my tranny a second time. Pulled out the harness to lengthen the proper leads and going to properly wrap it before reinstalling it. Looks so much better than a 700 harness! |
Spent some time, this afternoon, with the harness, getting everything laid out and sorted, so I can cleanly make my extensions and wrap it up.
I extracted the Ballast Resistor pack and the corresponding leads from the 745ti harness, but unpinning all the ends of the 6 total wires from the connectors, splicing open the loom and carefully taking it all out. I test fit it to my new harness and the leads are perfect length for mounting the resistor pack by the battery and running the leads through the harness to the injectors. Since I kept the pins in tact, I can just slide them into the corresponding slot on the injector connectors and just solder connect the power wire. I've got to make longer extensions for a wire to the coil and have to solder a pin on the end of the wire for my tach so it'll fit the firewall plug and run a lead to my tach. The gray and the blue wire to the Power pack is too short, as well as the ground, so going to lengthen then by about six inches, for a perfect fit. The orange wire that went to the Chrysler Ignition connector...I'm going to solder together and eliminate the now obsolete connector...already had to unpin it to get the gray wire to the coil...just going to cut and splice the orange wire to eliminate it's run to that connector. I lengthened my AMM leads by unpinning the six wires off the 745ti wires and cutting, and solder connecting them to the ends of the leads of the 240 wires...gives me enough length to run them with the wires for alternator and oil pressure sender, under the engine, past the alternator and cleanly out to the air box by the passenger headlight. Started to clean up the loom by the computers to, so I'll have a nice pair of leads to each brain and then one small connector for the power and fuel pumps... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

K, so it was a rough night, but now I've finally made some progress. I got the resistors wired in and most of the harness wrapped, just didn't wrap the leads to things in battery corner and didn't wrap the stuff by the computers...inside the car. I've got just a little work to go in these areas.
Installed the harness last night, tried to start it but it choked and died immediatly and I couldn't get it started...no power to injectors again. By the time I had woken up, I had remembered I forgot to tighten the grounds that are clamped by the fuel rail bolts. Checked on my lunch break and she fired right up! My power pack doesn't have long enough leads, but I learned the hard way that the gray wire is a shielded cable...so how do I lengthen that? I don't know how many hours I've invested in this, and I don't know if I wanna know... |
