Big Progress Today!!!

Actually got the car to move under it's own power! Didn't move but a few feet but was stoked no less.

I fit up the clutch cable and had to adapt a spacer between the rubber isolator and the lock washer holding the cable to the fork...No less, I have a working clutch!

Did some final soldering and ran my ignition and fuel pump leads across the dash to a snap connector by the computers...very clean.

I'm still concerned I may not have the belt timed properly. Redwood and I invested significant time in checking and rechecking, but aren't 100% certain we've done it right. It'd start and run, just very rough and the dizzy's at its limit, in the advanced position.

See my video...

Actually got it to idle and idle smoothly for some time. Gotta play with it some more, but think once I retard the dizzy, it'll not run.

Hope this isn't the start of a bad relationship...

I went to try and get my car started...I've just gotta get it starting again so I can at least have Carlo check out the timing, but it's gotta run for that. I tried jumping the computers with no luck, until I pulled out my jumper lead, then tried it like normal and she fired right up! It sounds like it's running right, till you give it some gas and it starts breaking up...and starves and chokes when you hit the throttle...doesn't die but timing is wayyyyyyyyy off.

Got the car all wrapped up now and removed the GT air dam so it doesn't get damaged on the flatbed...towing it over to Carlo's tonight so he can check it out tomorrow.

That was a bit scary.

worried now that I might have the distributor in but off by a tooth, or something like that. i had to have my car outta the shop by tonight anyways, and considering i don't have any more time to scratch my head...just gotta bite the bullet. maybe an hour of his time, while i'm out riding bikes to the golden gate bridge with some lil hottie...sounds like a good plan to me.

So car's safe and sound down at CRO...Keith's got it on the trickle charge and he's givin it the luv she needs.

He was wondering why I left the hood ajar and I explained how the modified 745ti intercooler brackets wouldn't clear the hood.

It was like a light bulb went on in his head...

What did he have?

...

......

.........

Why, a brand new, unused set of 240ti brackets...

I just keep rollin the dice and it all comes my way!

So Honey-D is still at CRO. They found a series of vacuum leaks in the turbo hoses, so they have been replaced. Keith said my plugs were fouled, so some fresh plugs and looked like a dizzy cap too.

He's got it idling smooth, but it still misfires under hard acceleration. Sounds good, timing is at 10-degrees and it'll hold an idle, so all progress.

He says the adjustment on the amm isn't working, and he's not sure why.

I wonder if the amm is bad, or is the pin-out order of the 6 wires going to the amm somehow different on an 87 745ti vs an 88 244? I lengthened all 6 leads using the 745ti amm wires, and kept everything pinned the same,,,wonder if the 240 harness is different from the 740 harness at the ecu side.

Progress but not completion; I'm getting excited for this!

New Stuff!!!

so this sux...

but these'll make it better...

Found these and gave em a quick bath...uncracked, with all springs and fasteners...and feet not broken. Volvo Plasti-Chrome in perfect, shiny shape...just need to hit em with the silicone to hydrate them...

Tis all for now...got boxes, upon boxes of uber-awesome parts, just awaiting the return of Honey-D!

Keith found a few faults in my ability to wire the car, thus necessitating a new computer and his repair on the wiring. We're down to tracing one final short and she should be ready for the exhaust shop. So glad an end is so close in sight.

I'm so excited to drive this car for the first time...again, and to get all my cool new parts in and polish this baby up!

Still on my spell of down-time; awaiting the return of Honey-D. I thought I'd continue my hunt for the unobtainium; collecting the unique bits that will make my unique 242 more complete. In case people were thinking she was a bit to bastardized and frankensteined, I thought I'd share my plan for cleaning up the swap. Getting the 740 B230 in and running wasn't the difficult part, but making it fit in there neatly and cleanly, as Gothenborg intended, is going to take some time, effort and patience. The goal is to seek specific Volvo original parts to more seamlessly integrate the best of both the early 240's and late 740's...it'll be unique for a Volvo lover and really unassuming to any outsider.

I really wanted to save myself from driving the 242 as is, with the 740ti oil cooler hanging from a zip tie off the radiator support. I had to bend the hard lines to clear the 240 motor mount and it just doesn't fit as cleanly as I'd like...doesn't like it was supposed to be there. I sourced an original 240 oil cooler from an '82, so it's got the stainless steel braided flex lines from the cooler to the hard lines. It's in great shape and is a dry part...no sign of leaking. Got it complete with the proper brackets, and hardware...couldn't get the piece that attaches to the stud on the block, though don't know if it's different from the b230ft one or if they're just clocked differently.

mmm, stainless baby!

unmolested hard lines, hard line carrier to alternator plate, with alternator bracket bolts and the proper "tapped" bolts that send the oil.

Again, in the interest of going for the complete effect, I grabbed the 240 turbo air box assembly with cobra. The plan is to eliminate the fuel dizzy and plug that spot from air leaks. The car had a little over spray that got on the cobra, but wasn't anything the lacquer thinner couldn't remove. Got to continue to clean and disassemble, so I can silicone treat the plastic, plug the fuel dizzy and fit it in the car with a K&N.

The passenger corner of the engine bay in my 242 was a real mess, between the quick fit cone filter, original n/a expansion tank and windshield wash bottle and pump. Grabbed the 240 turbo expansion tank, bracket and hardware...

and the driver side located wash bottle and pump...got the driver side coil bracket too though not pictured...

For a rainy day, or season, and when I get the rest of what I want for my Stage 2 suspension. '89 GMC Jimmy 4x4 front Bilstein HD shocks...good for less droop on way low 240's

Also got a perfect, unscratched, uncracked, unmolested dash center bezel. It's got some mold on it, but it'll wash and silicone up very, very nicely!

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need.

Was thinking something like this for the K-Jet air box...

but that looks like a $180 custom aluminum plate...wonder if I can't just take the fuel dizzy off.

fun with kerosene...started cleaning the oil cooler and hardware, wash and expansion tanks and S10 billy's...

not 100% certain, but from what I've read, they should be valved for about a 350lb spring.

She's Back........

Picked her up this morning from Johnny Franklin's; Donny modified the 740 down pipe to fit and welded in the 740 cat to the 240 exhaust I had....just stock 240 na exhaust with resonator delete. A very quiet subtle car indeed.

Shocked by the amount of audible turbo activity, spooling up and blowing off...all the time. I found a vacuum leak...the little hose from the FPR to the intake manifold. I'd assume turbo cars HATE vacuum leaks, so going to address this first thing in the AM, and probably replace the hose from the wastegate actuator to it's bung on the intake manifold. Just hope the sounds aren't a sign of the turbo going bad.

Spent the afternoon at Kenny's, helping restore flathood grills. Got my replacement headlight surrounds installed and Ken repaired a now flawless late DL flathood grill for my 242, and I dressed it up with a blue Lambda Sond badge! Thanks again Ken! We tightened up the oil cooler lines to stop the leak, and I managed to wire up all my gauges...got the temp sender switched, finished running the lead for the tach and found the plastic connector for my speedo cable. Tomorrow, I think I'll try to wire up the R-Sport cluster. Also got the proper 240t intercooler/radiator brackets installed, so now my hood closes properly. Still have to source one part for the 240t oil cooler and I can swap that over...hopefully at the same time as when I install my big Intercooler.

Nice to have my baby home and running strong...still have endless projects to catch up on in the aftermath of this swap.

BOOSTIN BABY!!!!!!!

Well, still got plenty to do to wrap things up on this 242, errr. Turbo. Taking it step by step; doing little stuff so I can be thorough and get this swap completed cleanly and safely.

Took some down time today to put in the 240 Turbo radiator expansion tank from the '82 Turbo parts car. The upper screws lined up perfectly for the bracket, but the lower mount is over 1" off, so going to have to tap a new hold, but the drill in the shop is broken...gotta finish that, but shouldn't take long.

Cleaned the bracket with kersoene and thoroughly scrubbed the expansion tank with denatured alcohol...was tough to get the stains out but a pencil eraser can work wonders...

Just gotta brag a bit about the Flathood setup. Got really lucky and found a clean pair of head light surrounds in flawless condition. Ken really hooked me up on the restored late model Flathood grill. I'm looking sharp, especially with the retro blue Lambda Sond badge I found.

Just gotta silicone the rubber bumper trim pieces and swap out the corner lights and I'll be ready for the Concourse, lolz.

I just couldn't wait...

just had to move the lead for the oil sender from the main prong to the gauge itself...a ground, the lead for the lights and one lead for the volt meter to the fuse panel.

still haven't swapped oil senders, because I've got to source a brass elbow that broke off when i pulled outta the '77 245.

stoked no less!!!
