'so what it seems to me then, the entire class is pretty limited UNLESS someone doesn't spend a far amount of money. Is there are any all wheel car that would actually be a "good" candidate for Open Light?
I suppose Subaru might have the largest variety of gearing. But an entire field of subarus is somewhat boring.

A Sierra 4x4 is easy and cheap.

Comparatively.
There's MT754x4 box, with integral bellhousing for Cosworth/Pinto or V6 like Ranger 2.9--which we can make 2993 for cheap and 11.4 comp

And there's the Type94x4 box. Gear kits for Type 9 are as low as $1100 for good close ratio sets. Loose bellhousing so an ordinary Xratty bellhousing bolts right up.

'course. But I've seen Type 9 4x4 boxes go for 50 English squids.
Sumps are maybe 40, front diffs from 35, etc.

But:
Can a STRONG NA motor be built or acquired on the cheap?
What is minimum possible fighting weight?
Lots of archived racing parts hiding in garages, etc.

For cheap? Probably not.
Can a gearbox that isn't garbage be? Definitely not.
I'd guess maybe 2700-2800 lbs.
Not really. Maybe some trashed struts here or there.

Open Light is a band-aid class for people who NEED to rally a Subaru. And they eventually will NEED to be turbocharged.

There's pockets of decent competition though. It can be a successful regional class just based on how many Subaru fans there are. Other than that, why bother.

I ain't kidding when i say it should be the Group 4 Escort of North America.
Escort was made 1968-1980.
240 was made from 1975-1992

What a vision! Instead of 23 Subies and 10 other cars, 30 Volvos , 10 Xratties and 2-3 Misterburus and Sububitchies which nobody pays any attention to cause everybody is saying "meh, put him in a real car and hes 10 minutes behind a blind man".

Grant is dead on ...OL is not a performance class. For all the numbnuts guys who can't seem to read a fricking rule book and buy an AWD turbo as their first car it is a way out.

AWD suffers all the same problems as a FWD with the addition of more weight and less power to the road.

Offtopic (and I have no intention of building an OL car) but how much torque will the T9 and MT75 hold, and how much with some of the Quaife gearkits? Quaife says 250hp for one of their synchro kits but people say all sorts of crap. I'm just imagining something with one of the newer Ford V6s and AWD being a fun street car.

MT754x4 box is "safe' at 330 Cossie hp quote "depending on how brutal you are and how many jumps you do"

Type 9 depends on the gear set but as standard safe 250-270 ft/lbs of turbo type powerz.
