What is the general concencus on running hard lines inside the car? I had a friend run hardlines through the car and was "given shit" by a lot of people in the local rally community, saying it was unsafe and that he should have used all flex line. I have a feeling they were full of shit themselves, but...

I thought all rally cars run hard lines for brakes inside the passenger compartment. I can imagine you'd get a lot of flex running full braided stainless.
Now hard fuel lines...some people poo-poo those...but I'm going to do them in my car too. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/03/2012 06:00PM by fliz. |

Most people seem to like to build in excuses they can pull out just why they didn't win THE BIG RACE so they subconciously do things that would, to any outsider observing, seem incredibly shortsighted to down right stupid. So they're being farisghted by leaving themselves ready made excuses for failure and DNF....it IS far safer to park the car by the side of the stage because some rock or a dog in its death-thows kicked out when it was run over and smashed or tore a brake or fuel line....didn't think of that did ya smartypants! Why I heard of some allegedly genius Production guy who drove all the way cross country and left his fuel pump hanging out and it got smashed, and he parked it and he didn't wear ouit his tires on the rough rocky stages, so put that in you pipe and smoke it! He saved at least 30-35 bucks AND a set of tires.... No no me lad when i started the car I still have to this day, a Homologation Special in its day had all the brake and fuel lines inside and I belived all their ad copy about "Safer from corrsion, safer in accidents etc etc" cause you'd have to smash all the way INSIDE the car to get near the lines, believed the claptrap hook line and sinker I did.. And even though every square mm of the car has been hammered senseless and I've bottomed a million times and high centered it on snow and gravel, rolled it 2 times, and nothing ever even came close, I realise I'm on barrowed time So: your friends---where ever the hell they are, we don't know because you refuse to follow our one rule and have only some lame screen name and no location-----are geniuses: its a lot safer to have fuel and brake lines outside the car cause when a rock rips one off, all the gas will just dribble underneath the car when it comes it a rest and soak in and there only been a dozen or so cases of hot exhaust lighting off weeds and brush and buring down cars...so I'm sure its not a problem. I think I'll put "Move the fuel and brake lines to outside the car" on the top of the To-do list for both the Saab and the Cossie... Just where and who are the geniuses? I want to thank them.. Oh yeah, at the top of the General Discussion there is a link that says: Announcement RALLY ANARCHY RULES - READ THIS FIRST (that means you, newb) Please read it and do the right thing. Sorry, John, for leaving that question with such a gaping hole in it that it let you get on a classic JVL tangent. You either have either: A ) Missed the point completely, which I guess is possible. In which case I have slightly clarfied my post. Chad seemed to get it however; or B ) Saw an opportunity to "VanLandingham" the new guy and deliberately avoid contributing to the conversation to have some fun instead. This seems more likely. I do appreciate the reminder to fill in my profile however, which I have. Sorry about that. I should have known how enraged you would have gotten after seeing that blank profile sticking out like a sore thumb. So I see now it was my fault for setting you off like that. I apologize. I still love you though buddy... so please use the time you are about to spend preparing a snappy response to this and instead respond to my monthly e-mail to you begging for an update on my JVAB rebuilds. Anyway, seriously, let's get back on topic here.
What's the issue that people have with this? I am also considering doing the hard fuel line inside (as opposed to flex). Some sort of safety issue with lines getting pinched/torn or otherwise damaged? Runamuck Rally Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 01/04/2012 10:25AM by Towona. |

Really? People don't like hard lines now? Jeez. I got non-stop shit for running all soft lines for my brakes. I don't notice or feel any issues from that, though Paul will tell you that there is a negative effect. It's also about 5 times more expensive. I am going to do the same with my fuel lines, recognizing that you WILL have more fuel smell in the car and again, 5 times more expensive.
My reasoning? I've seen plenty of people and cars have flaring problems and end up with drip drips. I have no issues with making AN lines and they will be transportable to a different make pretty easily. Though that level of looking ahead is probably retarded. Grant Hughes |

hey Tony P, seems like some people you are a) totally unable to see clear, concise, accurate information just because when somebody is answering the same really glaringly obvious question for the 400th time in the last 25 years, its couched in a slightly parodic tone... Want it clear: run the fucking lines where they're safe. Only an idiot would choose to volutarilry subject brake and fuel lines to corrosion and rock damaged. A couple of moments thinking should be all that's needed.. And don't project "rage" onto me for you not bothering to fill out the one simple rule, you don't want to put your name up for whatever reason. You new inserts have been here forever, the tops are machined, but the tubes were full of dirt and rust, and that has cost a lot of time and effort to get them clean enough to press new bushings in...it would have been easier to just give you new tubes. Bushings are done, they will be pressed in in the next day or so. Probably have the things packed ready to send by Sunday.. So you will be getting: new bushes, seals, inserts and spring seats and locking rings. Again... I didn't ask anything about running the lines inside vs outside. I'm asking about hard inside vs flex inside.
I do truly enjoy many of your posts and I do get the sarcasm and parody... that's what makes them enjoyable. I don't mind that these posts are "my expense". I get it... really. I'm mostly pissed that you've gone off on a tangent that has little or nothing to do with the question I posed. I can be sarcastic and parodic too you know! ![]() Runamuck Rally Edited 1 time(s). Well the thread was originally the same old outside to inside question I've been answering since 1984 and yeah I skimmed your post---while cooking lunch and answer the phone (circle track stuff? Yeah I even make cool shit for circle track, I guess) Teach me to skim posts while cooking lunch and yapping on the phone. To barrow a phrase: "DOH!" So en claire running flex inside is udder madness, and a waste of a lot of money for no reasons concievable... who would be suggesting that? And what is the alleged good reasons why fancy hose or what is allegedly so bad with hard line? I'd go one step more and suggest that the only place you need metric fittings in as male adaptors into the calipers and leave them in as permanent with make -3 out. It's so much cheaper to use 'merikanski inverted flare or AN than buying hoses with metric. Noob question.
Im removing the old lines. Planing out a route inside, through and back out. I got to thinking. And Stumped myself. When running a 2-1 T, do I need to up the dia for the single line? Part of my brain said yes since Im running 2 into one. The other part said no cause it would seem to cause problems with pressure. Im currently running Google and coming up with a whole lot of donuts. |
