my fuel pump recently died while ironically driving the car to the gas station, and after monkeying around with the stock fuel pump location, i decided it was about the worst place for it.

i built the fuel pump box into the front of the spare tire well, as the back has the battery box. i think this was much easier building two sides of a box instead of 5, if it was on top of the shell inside.

if you dont cut out the spare tire well, i think this is a pretty good use for it.

thanks for the pics. gives me good ideas.

Make it lower and you just need a flat sheet of 1/32 to close it off:

It's called the Gary Busey helmet protector protector...

Really you just need a box covering the top/fill plate. Pretty easily done. Search for pics of the Capri... ah fuck it... Here it is...
http://picasaweb.google.com/bolson16/RallyCapri#5185043661786397346

They put a box over the whole thing, but really it just has to be over the fill plate. Whatever you find easier...
"The capri uses uses grommets for the fuel line, and the fill cap is under the door in the top of the cover."

Yep, right where every works car I can imagine, and plenty of superb handling road cars place the weight---RIGHT OVER THE AXLE---and placed where "the changing fuel load has the least effect on handling"<----see the quotes? That's from a works prep manual for a WRC car.

Yeah awesome idea, that's good that you noticed that from a single photo.
Most guys who think they're smart usually think of other places that all have serious drawbacks..since they didn't think things thru.
Good catch.

well i dont know what kind of car that is in the picture that grant posted, but if it was a MK1 or 2 golf, that is exactly the spot that the OEM fuel tank is in, just higher up, and costs more money.

I can't see whatever Grant posted, he's too cool to bother to right click and post it here.

But somehow, YOU looked at a photo showing a simple answer to Maxs' question showing an easier way to mount the pumps on a simple plate, and how to close it with a simple aluminum sheet and YOU decided that somebody was advocating buying a fuel cell..

Fail, like F- in basic reading skill.

The subject was and remains spend a bunch of time and effort carving out the spare tire well---and THEN trying to figure out a safe and easy way to mount the pumps and filter---or do as real WRC teams did ---who couldn't chop off the spare tire pressing---and use the ready made place for pumps, filter and maybe those lower priority spare you want to have along but don't need instantly like triangles and tow rope...

What i want to know is why are you looking to find absurdities in things and get sarcastic when there wasn't any absurdities, just simple easy answers---and correct ones just to be clear.

(while you are busy learning stuff, another reason not just RWD cars like the one in the photo (some shitbox turbocharged Ford thing) placed the OEM tank or fuel cell there between the towers is: It is also the bar none safest place.
Away from the parts of the car where it is only 040 sheetmetal between you and that big ass pine tree....You have the whole rear trunk area, the strong towers supported by extensive cage, very hard to reach..

Isn't learning stuff great?smiling bouncing smiley

You're fawkin welcome.smileys with beer

Key part... pics of Capri... It's Bob Olson's Capri. Or what was Bob's. Might have sold it. Couldn't tell you where fuel pumps are, someone said something about a fuel cell.
Not sure why this is so difficult...
