fuel slosh engine cut out
November 20, 2011 03:38AM
So i have an "injur-nearing" issue. Basically the gas tank has about the worst sloshing = fuel starvation issues around. There is no sump in this tank. Im considering looking for a different tank to adapt on in there or maybe cutting it open and tack welding in a sump.

Another other ideas? the car does consume a large amount of fuel and i can start noticing issues around the 1/3 to 1/4 remaining point which depending on the stage mileage and transit, i could reach...

I have the same issue with my GT. i have not looked into it but i think you could be safe with an accumulator and a second pump, Like VW did with the MK2s

The Mk2 Golf accumulator thing looks like the most easily adaptable solution. It's a separate 1l box that the fuel pump sits in. It's fed by a low-pressure in-tank pump, and the fuel return is also routed to it. Get one from a 16v model and you'll have all of the pressure/volume you'll ever need. (The fuel pump is rated for something like 200hp *at 90psi* )

Alternatively, you could try adaptulating a fuel module from a newer car. It's basically an in-tank accumulator: fuel pump sits in a self-contained module that holds an amount of fuel. The ones from 4th-gen Camaros look pretty nice since they have a spring and a hinge and they bolt on to the tank instead of using a spring clip. But this is gonna be an expensive way to do it.

Or you could just always always always make sure to top the tank off at every opportunity, and expect to have to baby the car through left turns when it's under half tank or so.

I was using the tank slosh problem as a way to figure how well my suspension was working, for a while. Used to be I could run the car down to 1/8 tank and not run into problems. The better I got the handling, the more fuel I'd need in the tank before sloshing it away from the pickup. I'm up to 3/8 tank now...

well if im going to do stage rally, i have no intentions of being limited in my turns. I will certainly check out the accumulator idea but i think RA specifically states you can not have a fuel sump...

maybe im full of crap because i cant find anything about sumps...so then since the tank has no intake pump, i would need to have two pumps then... is that worth the extra complications?

The problem with the tank is that it's about 2 feet long by 3 feet wide and the fuel pickup is at the far left side. So are both maybe 2" diameter access holes. So while adding foam to prevent slosh is a nice idea, I'm not sure how you could get it in there and position it well without going all texas sawzall massacre on the tank.

And yeah you can buy the foam separately! You'd better be able to, it needs to be replaced every couple years since the stuff degrades and turns into rubber granola.

I remember finding something in the rules that said you couldn't add a secondary fuel tank, so I'd assuming modding your OEM tank to have one that's internal would be just fine. Of course maybe this is a grey area regarding surge tanks aka swirl pots aka accumulator boxes.

What about a swirl tank? pre pump, swirl tank then main in line pump...

Might do da trick
