Yes, seats BEFORE cage, and no, you don't need seats or belts in the car to get a logbook inspection. That is for the structure and cage only. Seats and belts will be checked at every tech inspection.

I ask for seats and belts to be mounted in the car before I will do a logbook inspection. They don't have to be the ones you're planning on running - they can be out of date or borrowed or whatever - but I want to see how you've mounted them.

I used to be ok without them, but I had a couple of cases where someone explained to me how they were going to mount things and I OKed it, and then they did something nutty instead.

Thanks guys. All good to know. Anybody on here from the mid Atlantic? Scrutineers?

And does that happen to be Dave Coleman who wrote for SCC back in the day?

You've got a NASA scrutineer just up the street in Coal County. Sort of in my neck of the woods (should be Delaware soon).

Yeah it's the same Dave Coleman. well maybe not really the same---rumor is that he had a big "Road to Damascus" revelation after they let him out of the institute and all the elctro-schock stuff.
So now he's hooked up with fellow rallyanarchista slim Tim Taylor doing all kinds of truly insane lemons projects..
Both should be re-institutionalized.

Here come the warm jets!

I heard the latest FIA seat is around $1000 each. Haven't verified that but that is a lot of money for many of our participants. Many teams only making one or two rallies a year so seat wear is minimal anyway.

Gene McCullough
NRS/RA scrutineer

You mean 8862-2009, right?
When I checked it out, I thought they started around 3K and went up from there.

I think the only cars required to have those are WRC Grp. A? I'd hope costs will drop significantly in a couple years.

That sounds.... excessive... There surely must be different standards like they have/had for suits.
At least I'm able to get a FIA approved seat that will let me do all national levels of rallying over here, for around 1500 DKK - which is something along 250 USD depending on the exchange rate. With our pricing, VAT etc. generally being higher than in the states, a similar price for you guys should be more around 200 USD.
That is for a tube frame seat though - not something I personally ever am going to get into (again), but that's a different matter. Entry level fiberglass shell seat are not much more - maybe an additional 50-60 USD.

Can't remember the numbers as it was over a year ago. Seems like it was a new FIA standard for rally seats and a large price attached.

We have an OMP poster on our wall at the shop for their new spec seat with Petter Solberg. 8862-2009 sounds right. Yeah, think the seats are like 3k or so a piece.

I like good seats and belts. The cheap G-Force FIA belts are totally sufficient. I prefer paying the premium for Sabelt belts though as there are a few things I like better on them. My current ones are now expired though so we'll see what I end up buying when it comes time. Probably Sparco or Sabelt ones through Demon Tweeks.
For my first seat, I bought the cheapest seat I could the first time. Then I say in every seat I could and found the seat I found most comfortable and that's the one I use.

I've always wondered why NRS even requires an FIA sticker on the seats?

what is wrong with using an outside groupe for safety equipment testing ?

an fia approved part cost many times more than the same part with out an fia sticker
if some wants to compete in an fia class then they can play by fia rules, but for those of us that are not in an fia class why do we need to spend more cash for fia approved parts .

i have trusted my life to sfi, snell and other agencies that do not sanction the events for years with no ill effects.

what's next from the fia , fia approved cage installers? using fia approved tools and tubing?

Nothing, until that outside group's business model revolves around selling their approval.

Not saying that SFI is worse than the FIA, but they sure aren't any better IMO.
