VW MK4 TDI build
December 08, 2011 03:40PM
I started a build thread a while ago on Special stage but I figured it would be a good idea to throw one up here. This project has been a couple of year in the making now since I've had to spend most of my spare effort keeping my MK1 stage ready but after a lot of procrastinating, I've finally got some momentum going.

The car started off as a front corner fender bender that my friend's insurance company wrote off so I was able to pick it up for cheap. I stripped everything down at the beginning of 2010 and sent the shell off to Bill Doyle at www.cagethis.com for a cage then it spent most of the following year sitting on a rotisserie while I scrounged up parts and procrastinated about the sequence of the build. Now that the East coast season is over for a few months I've been able to get some paint on and started putting things together. If I can maintain my momentum I hope to have a log book in the next few months.

Anyone else with MK4 build experience out there? I know there have been a few over the years but the old build sites that Chris Havas and John Hamilton had are long gone.

I need to get some photos off my other computer but here are a few to show some of the progress.

Is that a legal way to do the A-pillar support bars? I thought those had to connect all the way down to the floor and tie in where the sill bar an A-pillar bar intersect?

That's right. 4 years and running, bench running champion. Although, I've recently upgraded to "wooden rolly cart" instead of jackstands. They produce more bench warming ability, and far better handling.

Paint and graphics are still a little ways off. I had thought about going with an orange scheme to match the MK1 but the Havas boys already have an orange MK4 that may be back on the stages soon. Right now the car is black and will probably stay that way initially, but I can say it will have DMack Tyres USA emblazoned on the side.

I worked on the fuel tanks this week and hope to have some updated photos soon.

I fabbed up a pair of fuel cells a couple of weeks ago for the tire well. The smaller tank is the diesel start up tank and the larger will be for vegetable oil. I left a bit of room for storing spare motor oil etc.

I plan on getting the drivetrain in later this week.

very nice. I hope the lack of a FT3 and FIA sticker doesn't torpedo this...
And he will still need a cover over the fillers or the car will explode the instant he turns the key.
