That's Awesome!!!! grinning smiley

I've found the subaru short intakes work best if you make any sorta 'scoop' in the front and make a box around the Cone filter. So you have a ram air, to your short intake . I did that on my STI and the cone Temp went from 105F to 74F on a day when it was 70 degrees outside. I tested with a pyrometer and the 2 tests were with in 10 minutes of each other on the same stretch of road. and same time idling before and after. i was really shocked. (but happy)

I modified the above radiator ram air intake of the STI go to into a home made "air box" basically i just recreated the subaru factory setup with out the silencer and a higher CFM capacity air filter.

Awesome! Awesome!

Tell me this car will be at rally idaho or mendocino this year!! Please ! Please ! Please !

I made myself a short intake to put the filter behind the strut tower

I'm going to make some sort of scoop in the hood to direct fresh air to the Filter in the future.

And sorry it won't be making any rally's for a while, my goal is get it driving before this next summer I want to make it to a couple car shows this next year so people can see this cluster eff in person. smiling smiley

I still think you're nuts, but to each their own. That's just unnatural. But at least it will be unique.

I think hurst said pretty much the exact same thing when I was talking to him at mt hood. smiling smiley

Great job, love it... I started buying parts to do something similar, thanks to your motivating posts and work at getting the bellhousings made. Sadly, I'll probably not get that project rolling.

Just to chip in, the mid-400s figure on weight of the rotary that gets quoted (usually by people doing V8 swaps) is for the 3rd gen twin turbo jobbies with the turbos and power steering and AC stuff on it. NA, the longblock is more in the 160 pound range (I could be off by 10-20 pounds either way as this is off the top of my head, but that figure was achieved by putting an actual engine on an actual scale instead of internet hearsay) and with accessories I'd wager is in the 200ish pound range.

That said... this is kind of cool; definitely different, pretty weird, not a solution I'd undertake, but for all that it kind of looks like it should fit in there.

No you're right about the twin turbo figure but even a dressed na 13b isn't anything to all that light either. I found some figures from some airplane sites that still put it in the mid 300s.

Regardless I know I can lift the ej22 on my own, not something I want to go running with but still, it has to be lighter then a rotary.

I'm yanking a 12a out of a parts car here in a few weeks, I'll grab a scale and toss it on it and really see.

The airplane guys are calling it 300-325lbs from the firewall forwards; that's including the engine cradle, reduction gearbox, and propeller... which don't tend to be used in automotive applications. winking smiley Rotaryaviation.com breaks it down in their faq; they call it 220ish with accessories (prop gearbox isn't used in cars, and I figure we're not counting radiators or starters on weight breakdowns for the EJ either) and 30 less for a Renesis somehow.

FYI, I do kind of like and own both families of cars, so I don't have any real axe to grind. winking smiley

Hmmm... I wonder if there's anything in the regs against using something akin to an airplane propeller to generate downforce... if there's a second engine, in the back seat of a car, and it's pointing vertically, does it count against the displacement limit of whatever class when it's not driving any wheels? grinning smiley

Good idea.. sort of like the F1 car that used its exhaust to create an air / side skirt to help the areo?

maybe just create a fan to suck air through the floor. reverse hoover craft style!

Ah well ok then, so maybe no real weight benefit. Regardless it makes the old timers shake their heads in shame/disapproval/whatever. smiling smiley

I like my ej22 even in my overweight impreza, I'm sure this will make for good times. And it will be driving the right wheels too. grinning smiley

Whereas on a shitty RS I have sitting in my field, I'm sorta thinking of trying to figure out a a way to bolt a 13B up to it. grinning smiley I mean hell, they're cars, they're pieces of metal... why *not* do something that you find fun if you want to go to the trouble?

And call it a rally variant of the Can-am Chaparral 2j. if you're not familiar with this, read on for the details on this amazing and rule breaking monster of a race car.

Well yeah; I was just thinking a reverse-helicopter might be better for gravel than a vacuum cleaner. All that gravel and stuff going through the fans would be hard on things.
