Don't take the constructive (groan) criticism as a personal attack of any kind. We rally and build to a very strict formula for cages. The car guy in most of us gets disturbed when we see that much work (great work btw) somewhat thrown away due to a choice of tubing and a couple of bars. Nothing personal.

Its a very nice, detailed build and I'll bet it will be a total hoot to drive.

You're nuts btw.....grinning smiley (but in a good way) and if ya wanna run advance at Olympus let me know I might be able to work something out.

I guess its dammed if you do and dammed if you dont type world.

Welcome to Rally Anarchy. smiling smiley

Really, though, I wouldn't take it hard - you're talking to people who logbook the cages for probably the most stringent cage rules on this continent. It's their job to nitpick.

I'm with Dave. I wanna see a TR8 rallycar too...Mr. Clark is worth listening to, I bet pretty much every car in the PNW has his rollcage or at least his cage updates in it...

Well that may be exaggerating a bit...

Excellent attitude. It's going to be a very cool car! And the welds do look very nice.

The top side of the tube was welded and not the sides or bottom prior to the base getting welded down to the plates. I did look at the top sides and areas that were not in direct view with inspection mirrors. I do this everyday for work....inspect welds from handrailing to nuclear piping.

Maybe with all the reaction to the cage portion of this build I should have just used one of these SCCA/NASA/COM road racing copmpliant cages?

I guess its dammed if you do and dammed if you dont type world.

BTW-Jay thanks!

Now you're just overreacting. The build looks good, the cage looks good. Just pointing out some issues that might pop up if you were to try to stage rally this beast. Sounds like that was never the intention and you are building it specifically for Targa Newfoundland which is fine. I dig the JB tribute theme.

My goal is to keep the car and hit the track for open sessions. I want to do the Targa NF and well thats it. Someday my ultimate goal is to buy and run an original "Works" TR7V8 in Historic but I am sure it would be laughed out of the US since it was built to 1978 standards and having the V8 does not help. Im sure if I dove into NASA/CARS/RA rules & regs the TR8 would be penalized through the nuts like it was for SCCA road rcaing & prorally to make the build worthless.

This is not true at all, people would think it's cooler than shit. There's still enough old guys out there that remember Buffum roaring down the stages in his TR8. Hell, I remember John Shirley rolling his TR7 V8 at Maine Forest 12 years ago, right at a spectator area.

I wish the Historic class was stronger but that would be a perfect place for it. The Group 5 rules are pretty free as to the engine so that's not a worry.

I love the picture! Here are a few I have from my little 500+ picture archive.

So I pose this question open for disussion.....I have been on the fence about the final look of the car. There is the works red, white & blue, white with red & blue, silver with a rainbow colors, bufffums white & green (he would hunt me down and kill me for copying any of his TR8s btw!) or stock white with green accents matching the original green check interior as below......

The works 4 cylinder TR7 colors.....

The works TR7V8 colors.....

The works TR8 colors.....aka John Buffum.....

And his SCCA TR8

I like the tr8 (Smeets) colors but I would substitute black for the dark blue just to be different.

I agree on the Smeets colors.

I remember the Buffum TR8 very well making good sounds on the rally stages. I am not that old damn it.

Of all the hard things to do I figured the air pan air cleaner assembly used in NASCAR/AARCA would be an issue trying to conform to the underside geometry of the bonnet (hood) After a few hours or trimming it turned out really well and all that I need is a 14"x2.5" K&N air filter that is ordered.

Initial Fitment

Made a template for some baseline measurements

Then the final product less air filter.
