Dimple die
February 27, 2012 02:42PM
I'm looking for anyone (in Seattlish area) that has a 1.24 and 1 inch or so dimple die that may want to punch out 24 holes. I'm making my gussets and well, money is getting thin right now, would gladly get you a 6 pack or something. (I plan on buying some dimple dies but they are ridiculas in price.)

I can have the holes drilled and just ready to punch.

I was considering just doing the notch at the bar intersections to view welding but the dimple die looks better.

Thanks Chris

There's a guy on pirate that's been selling packs of dimple dies at a pretty decent price (that I can't recall, but I'm cheap and plan on getting a set smiling smiley )... Currently out of stock I believe though.

I'm a cheap bastard when it comes to tools sometimes.

Made with a 12mm 1/2" drive socket and a piece of roll bar tubing in the vice. Also, a hammer was involved.

Dave what did you use to cut the holes? Was it just a hole saw?

Has anyone used the new type of hole saw with the carbide cutter teath? Do they run true?

I've used some hole saws that were ground tool steel, and they were incredibly true. I measured to hole after the cut and it was only 0.005in over (used a hand drill). The carbide ones, I assume, will also run true since they are machined and not rolled.

Of course the screaming question is: wot da fock is the concern about tolerances when using a fockin hole saw?
You need tolerances you use the right tools: drill, broach, bore.

In RA since the change to FIA 253 gussets have been required. Believe that was 2005 or 2006 rulebook. On the main hoop X, door bar X, a-pillar reinforcement to door bar (even if not intersecting), and roof X if done. Two per junction.
Hence why the a-pillar intersecting the door bar means less fabrication.
And why a V in the roof means less fabrication.

I've always thought it'd be funny to the the gussets and two corresponding sides instead of across from each other. It's not specified technically. smiling smiley

I asked Hurst about that and I was told they could be on the same side. I think that's what I'm going to have to do with the BMW...or cut the door bar mess out and start over.

If you want to spend a little money on some dimple dies I think it would be hard to find a better value than these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3pc-Conduit-Size-Dimple-Dies-Set-1-2-3-4-1-/160725166469?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtr&hash=item256bf76985

They are conduit sizes which is a bit misleading but since nothing has to pass through the holes it doesn't really matter. The advantage is that you can buy a Hydraulic Knockout kit from HF that will punch the correct size holes for these AND you can use the hydraulics to make the dimples too.
