Rally Car:
05 Focus ST

Needing help with Rally focus
March 05, 2012 11:11PM
Hey all!
I'm new to the forum, my name is Michael Mattingly. I am currently in the middle of my rally car build which is a 2005 focus ST.

Here is how the car looked before the rally build, it was a boosted track car.

The ST was gutted and decided to go for rally instead.

I recently got around to putting the car together by using a donor 04 SVT Focus. So it currently has the SVT front and rear brake setup, sub-frames, and steering rack.

My issue: It looks like my roll cage has been built only for track and wont meet requirements for the rally scene. I know it can be modified to work, however I am running low on funds at the moment and dont have a pipe bender.

Hoping to maybe meet some good people on here and get thoughts and opinions on the build. Maybe even some helping hands, I am the guy who always lends a hand back when needed!

Welcome. Have you read the rule book yet? FIA article 253 obn cage construction?

I can't answer your cage questions, as I am no expert, but someone will soon enough. Whats the end goal? G2 car? G5 car with a drivers waiver?

Tacoma is way too far for me to go help, and I am in the middle of my own build (car #2), and helping with another car. Talk of a mini meetup next wednesday to watch WRC Mexico..

Thank you for the welcome Sean!

Yeah I have gone over the regulations on the cage and noticed mine will not pass the way it is.

By what I am seeing I think a G2 car. Looking to do stage and rally cross. But still new to the scene so... Up for debate as we move on.

It would be nice to meet up with people on here, depending on when that is. I am a little busy at the moment moving into the new house.

BEFORE WE SAY ANYMORE: what is the tube OD and wall thickness?

Mike doesn't look like you need a bender much (roof bars is about it) but you'll need to move and add some straight tubes.

I could show you how to save some of this IF THE TUBE OD and WALL is OK.

You own an angle grinder and a 4" pad and have a pile of 50 grit and some 120?

Which front knuckles didya get?? Piccie of caliper mounting please!

We're helping another pooor bastid Chris Kobyashi who has an 01 Fuck-us
find the right junk yard bits to grab before he does suspension so he'll have to deal with it once...

Its late for me, more tomorrow or just call around 10 ish tomorrow.
I'm looking after No2 daughter and de-burring thousands of toofies off a run of 25 Volvo steel flywheels I made

Dayum maybe i could make some fuck-us flywheels!! The Duratec ones are HEAVY!

I have the SVT knuckles with the SVT brakes.

Sorry if i cant answer all the questions, I a bit lost on here lol

Nice car. Bummer you did not get to keep the duratec motor

SVT knuckles and brakes are a good choice but you may have fitment issues with front calipers on most 15" wheels. Which will likely require some clearance of the caliper or the wheel or both.

If you want to have plenty of room you can get the front brakes calipers, carriers, and disks from any focus that is 05+. They will be a direct bolt in and fit every 15" wheel on the market.

We had a nice long talk last night. Luckily he has 2 Duratecs. No manual trans at all yet.
He works maybe 6 minutes from here so between him and Chris K we can have a chance to look at and poke at all sorts of things.

He has the BIG brakes but I put him on to the 05 thing, and he's a few minutes from a good Pick-n-pull so he can scout out the 05 stuff for himself and if he's a nice guy, for Chris as well...

Did any Fuck-us come with rear discs other than those SVT thangs?

Any idea of what the shortest final drive for the MTX75 is in any market?

Shortest Final drive for the MTX-75 is a 4.75:1 at about $800. Ford sold a 4.06:1 that was only about $150 for a while so it was likely an OEM part out of some other MTX-75 application. That is made by a company called M-factory. 4.75 will spend most of your rally in the 3-4 gears which is a pretty big jump. I also just found out they sell a close ratio 3-5 gear set. Which would make a really nice rally transmission for the focus.

All fucus' that came with Advance Trac, which is ford's stability control system came with rear disks. All rear disks on all Foci were the same no matter the year. There is no marking on the car that it had Advance Trac so you just have to look for rear disks on any focus you see.

Quick google search turned up with this tid bit:

SVT contours and V6 contours had 4.06s. if you have a early 00/01 MTX75, you can use the gears out of the SVT contour to get into 4.06s.

That FD from MFactory is $580, not $800...

It's the gearset that is $800...
1.690 3rd, 1.370 4th & 1.140 5th

looks like they'd be useless together, unless you want to be bouncing off the rev limiter at 92... (62cm tire, 7k rev limit)

The gearset w/ the 4.06 FD puts you at 110 max.

FWIW, MFactory is pretty beloved amongst the "Honda Honeys", but much more mixed reception when it comes down guys who actually race their cars. Some folks have destroyed parts (http://www.d-series.org/forums/transmission-alley/150997-broken-m-factory-lsd.html#post2379943) and had good service experience with them, other folks (fair number of Irish rally guys) have broken gears and been told "installer error, you're SOL".

Aaron, Good catch on the final drive price. I must have transposed the numbers since the last time I looked. I have heard mixed reviews about their products as well. I know Andrew K up in Canada has run the 4.75 in his rally focus for a while and seems to like it.

Not sure if I agree that having a 92 MPH top speed would be that much of a draw back for rally here in the states. How often are you at a rally where you are consistently above that speed? I agree that the 4.75 and the close ratio gears would make the box basically a 4 speed transmission.

Uh, my little Saab, all Saab 96 V4s cam with 4.88 stock. 0,86 top and around 63 cm tall tires..

They run out of steam in stock form at about 91 mph. But that's a paltry 65 bhp.

My rally car has the taller of the 2 common final drives, I have the 5.43:1 final after beginning with a 5.83 when i had a lower output motor. 0,92 top gear. with 62cm tires and 7100 rpm it hits right at 105mph.
And did that on every event I did.

Stock car weight is 1945 lbs, mine with 5 gal and a spare is 2015 lbs.

I am confuse what you guys are on about.

Plus; where is the link to final drives for Fucci? Only see Honja
