Yes, most certainly betterer.. Option C on that list is quite the beast for home shop use.. does look put together 1/2 decent for the price.

The HF 20 is much more solid than the 12. My 12 moves around a lot when using it. I need to retorque the bolts down, but this isn't the first time. Must be what I get for living in earth quake country.Thinking of just welding it together.

Both of the HF units give me that 'run for cover' feeling when using near their limits though.

So... I'm getting the picture that the cheap lightweight presses are pretty lightweight.... Ive actually never used one. I think the smallest press I've used was in the 20 ton range, and was a decent machine.

But that's a pretty big piece of steel for my little garage, even on casters.

I'm thinking about welding up a C press like design using some 4 or 6 inch box steel that could sit on the bench. Big gussets and just get use my 20 ton bottle jack. Or pick up one of those long throw cylinders and a mobile power pack.

Something like this:

Thoughts?

Thanks again.

oh noes!! is my Craiglist knockoff really just a knockoff of the HF knockoff?

all I know is it works, and the pneumatic thingy option is convenient. and crushing a beer can with 15 tons is.....fun, and flat.

plus, YOU've seen it in my garage...its not that big. casters man....casters.

Yep, same thing HF sells. The 20 really isn't too bad, 20% off coupon they can be had pretty cheap.

At our shop we have the standard H frame for the press, but the ram is a porta power. While ours is massive (has an air ram to move the table up and down), you could make something a lot smaller.
The real point that I am trying to make is: the porta power. You can take it off when not in use, or use it to straighten your car, or use it to jack up a big truck, or to fall a big/leaning tree. Really versatile tool.
Plus! You can get different sized rams. So when you need to really throw down the power you get the short and fat cylinder. When you don't want to be pumping for 20min, you put on the tall skinny one.

Empty or full ones?
We were just moving our portable heater last night and I was remarking on the aluminum melted on it from melting a beer on it. Empty. Always wanted to see what would happen with a full one. Well, it'd blow up and make a mess, I feel pretty confident about that.

I'm having flashbacks of college and 40oz geysers around the fire pit.

I've blown up plenty of sealed carbonated beverages in camp fires. Some explode quite well, enough force to blow all the logs into the surrounding woods and put out the fire. The kicker is you never know when its going to go. Although the fireballs from hairspray cans in the fire were more fun.

If you crush a full one.... it's amazing how long that can hangs on. I was able to move it probably 3/4" before it exploded.

It had perfectly uniform ripples the entire way down the can. Then the can split. I took a picture of the can but cant seem to find it.

I shot a full beer with a 9mm when we were winter camping. Funny thing was everyone thought it was empty. Never did find the top of the can that blew off.

20-ton HF at the minimum. I've got that one, and it even flexes a bit when pressing some wheel bearings out if they're really stuck ('85 Corolla, and a bunch of Mazdogs) I got mine years ago for around $100 bucks, maybe a bit more, on sale with a coupon, it was worth it for the time and money I've saved from having to take it somewhere else. Although, I want to get another set of arbor plates, because most things I'm pressing arent' perfectly square (just about any fwd knuckle you can think of) and spacers of some sort are generally needed.

ah yes.. the unspoken list of crap you need to actually use a press smiling smiley.. I've mostly been collecting old pieces of metal.. I think one is from a 1967 Dana 70 u-bolt plate.. Some old bearing pieces of different sizes.. some old sockets...
