Hand brake madness
March 16, 2012 01:41PM
I am trying to figure out the best way to plumb my handbrake hydro cylinder. The one in question is a Wilwood 3/4" compact master cylinder.

http://www.wilwood.com/PDF/Flyers/fl95.pdf

The car is already set up with 3AN adapters and lines. I've been trying to locate some 90 degree fittings for the two ports to go from the threading noted to 3AN but having issues locating what I need.

My question is would it be possible to use a banjo fitting instead with the copper crush washers? If so, how well will they seal or do I need to reface the surfaces of the inlet and outlet to get a better seal? Also, do the banjo bolts need to bottom out in the bottom of the fitting in the m/c (they are inverted flares).

Any other advise on how to hook these up and to keep the SS flex brake lines out of the way?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if banjo bolts come in that big of a size. 10 and 12mm are pretty standard.
The MC would have to be spot faced to make the crush washers work. What's wrong with doing it like everyone else?

Ah, flex lines. You can get the parts to add/build your own ends and just use fittings from summit, jegs, or any of the places that come up when you google an fittings.

They are available. I can get them at Baxter's Auto locally.

That's the rub. I don't know what everyone else is doing and I am running out of time to figure it out for myself.

Well it looks like people are using hard lines that you can bend and install yourself for next to nothing in parts. The AN flaring tool from Rigid is great but $125.
If you are running braided lines, I would cut the lines, add AN ends, then use the adapters.
If you need something done pronto, any hydraulic shop (and there are a bunch in Portlandia) can add the ends for you in a more secure fashion. If you have the time to order the tools and supplies to install the -3 ends into the braided hose, it's not that difficult.
So are you running braided soft lines or hard lines through the car? If you have soft lines, what brand of hose? Not all hoses are the same so getting the right sized ends can be challenging.
If you need immediate help I can drive up and help you with either. I'm free this evening, but it's kind of a drive from Corvallis.

I used -3 AN to 7/16-20 (3265-22) and 3/8-24 (6262-3-STRT) banjos.
Can be found at Pegasus. The parentheses are part numbers.

Grant- Did you use the Wilwood m/c? Did you have to reface the surface for them to seal or was it sufficient from the factory?

I have Girling ones up front and whatever came with my cheap K-Sport handbrake.
I just used copper crush washers and never had any issues. I have a dual output AN-3 banjo on my front circuit on the master also.

Is the surface already spot faced/machined or is it all bumpy and grainy form being cast?
If you are really careful with a file you can lightly flatten the surface.
Also, make sure you look at the diagram for the hoses! Apparently everyone plumbs these backwards. (piccie in the link above to previous anarchist bleeding problems with same MC)

All mine had a smooth machined surface.

Thanks guys! I am going to try the banjo solution first before custom hoses.

And I already made the mistake of hooking it up backwards. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

This is on the 323 I'm guessing?
Also I'm curious, why did you choose to go with the 3/4" MC?

A great and inexpensive place to get pretty much any AN fitting in existence is http://www.anplumbing.com/.

I chose it as it came with the car. If it's too big, I'll try a smaller one.
