Opinions/knowledge on RWD sequential gearboxes pls

Like the thread says, let's say you got a wild hair and decided to mate a bargain priced sequential box with a BMW 6 cylinder. What boxes are the least maintenance intensive? Cheapest? Cost effective?

Yeah, like a $6k quaife box.

Point taken though.

$6k gets you to and enters a lot of events... considering how terrible all of us drivers are in North America, I'd have to say it'd be better spent actually racing.

Not that I've ever saw you race, but I do find it humorous when the guys who are out for "fun" in their rwd cars can't even keep them sideways past the spectator points without something disastrous happening...

The thing that makes a sequential box last is a good ECU in addition to a shift cut and a throttle blipper solenoid. Removing the extremly fallable human from the shifting equation makes them last much longer. ProShift will save you massive amounts of maintenance money... http://www.proshift.com/home

Thanks for the preaching Adam, now back to the topic.

Yeah Adam from what I can see you find a lot of stuff what other people funny, and hilarious and in general contemptible...
I couldn't help but notice how funny you find what some people are doing, since you express your contempt so frequently everywhere..

Can you remind us again what makes you in a position to ridicule so many here so frequently?

Can a T5 be turned into a sequential dogbox? or to go to a sequential does it require a custom case?

You can get a bellhousing to Ford Type 9 gearbox for the BMW engines. Though I think the Quaife box is rated pretty low and most people go with the Sellholm box from my browsing of Finn sites and cars. The other one I've seen used is the Drenth box though either is going to be in the $10k range.

Dave. I already have the funding for two of the Drenth MPG gearboxes for us. They should be here relatively soon.

no expert on this, but I do like to look at pretty pictures...

I imagine it depends exactly what your sequential mechanism works like.

If it's set up like this:
http://a.yfrog.com/img736/2254/yukzy.jpg (image linked rather than inline because it's huge)
then I imagine you're looking at a full custom case.

On the other hand, if you use a setup like Saenz uses - http://www.saenzgroup.net/en/docs/CAJAS/MODELO_840/840%20TRANSMISIONS.pdf page 10 - chances are you could make that work in a T5 without having to do a full custom case - I don't know well enough to say whether you could make something that just bolted to a stock case or whether you'd have to modify the case.

Here's some feedback from the Micks: http://www.rallyforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=236830

more pretty pictures, from saenz again...

I imagine that it's possible to build something like this that would bolt in place of the case cover on a T5. you'd be able to directly move the 1/2 and 3/4 forks as above, and would need to adjust the design to actuate the 5th gear fork.

obviously for it to be useful, you still (have to? or want to?) drop the $$$$ on the dog gears for the T5.

Typically speaking, you get what you pay for.... or to put it another way, you'll get what's coming to you.

Quaife products, the gears/dogs in particular are shit, and apparently made from steel with similar properties to that of velveeta cheeze. Not to mention the 60 year old dog design.

I've never worked on a Sequ box, but I have built and maintained a shitload of dogboxes of all kinds. My experiance is this, the quality of the material, the manufacturing process and the design determine the reliability and service life. These three key items cost money and time to produce.

A good quality dogbox gearkit costs between $10k and $15k. If it's setup-up and driven correctly you'll have minimal maintenance costs, even with an occasional buzz of the dogs. If you buy a shit cheap ass gearkit for $5-6k, set it up right and drive it correctly you'll be pulling it every event and replacing dogrings, dogside gears, and whatever else the dog slivers fall into and get mashed.

I would'nt buy a sequ box unless I had all the other FAR more important items dialed in my car. Good engine, good diff, good suspension, and most impotantly good skills as a driver. Yes, sequ is cool, but they are hardly with the money when there is so many other CHEAPER items that will give you far more return.
