If you haven't tossed that hood release hardware yet, pull it out of your recycle bin and modify it to just remove the remote release mechanism but retain the safety latch. Then put it back on the car.
When you or your crew forget to fasten the hood pins, you'll thank me. Simon Simon Wright Owner/Driver USUK Racing - Home of the USUK Racing LED Light Bars! North America Rally Map |

They'll probably burn their hands on the hood pins anyway! ![]() When we wrecked at Sandblast a few years ago, by annoying the local flora until one of the pine trees leapt out in front of us, we had an underhood fire. The safety latch was the least of our problems. Kieran was on the hood stomping it straight enough so the the hood pins would let the damn thing go. All the while flames licking around the engine bay. We learned that day how pathetically brief the firefighting abilities of the typical rally car fire extinguishers were. Managed to get it put out though. Folks, seriously, do not hold down that trigger like some Master Chief annihilating hordes of Mgalekgolo. Use very short, targeted bursts at the source of the fire, not the flames. Thanks to the teams that donated their extinguishers as they passed. I've seen far more windshields busted by the hood than underhood fires. Simn Simon Wright Owner/Driver USUK Racing - Home of the USUK Racing LED Light Bars! North America Rally Map |

I've busted a windshield. I've also prevented an engine fire by putting out the car behind's fire. Had there been a safety latch, there would have been serious damage. As it was, they were able to replace the broken fuel line and continue racing. (hill climb)

By a factor of about 75 or 100+ to 1. And any car that has a hood that opens the wrong way is a likely victim... Here is how the superior cars are designed so the hood cannot blow open by the action of the wind: If you have a lesser design---and anything else is, almost---retain the latch. Or get a car with the better design. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Saftey latch is still on the car thanks for the heads up though. My 740 in the beginning of the post still has hood pins and the saftey latch still on it for the same reason and it has saved me multiple times in the few events I did forget to put the hood pins back in haha

There's two types of rally drivers.
Those that have forgotten hood pins and broken windshields and those that haven't. I'd say in a rally car the likelihood of a serious underhood fire being able to be put out is pretty small so sure, leave the latch on and just let the fucker burn to the ground. Side note, never whip the hood open when there is an underhood fire. Lift slightly and spray into engine bay. For our Chumpcar, I took the safety latch out because I figured if there was an underhood fire I'd likely be relying on some random course workers and volunteers that don't have a clue where or how the hood latch works but can easily operate an exterior hood pin. A bit of an update on the car beginning last week I started take apart the interior starting with gutting the dash. But due to this being the sunshine state its been raining for a week straight to where I was just able to get a solid amount of work done today in super heat leaving me drenched in sweat.
First thing I noticed going into the dash was that someone tried to go green with this car at some point but like all things green they.eventually go brown ![]() Then I noticed some suspicious wiring patches near the.fuse block an issue ill be tending too soon. ![]() Finally got the guts out ![]() I got the dash out a few days ago then today after about 2hrs in the heat I started getting sound deadening material off the passenger side floor board. I still have driver side to do. ![]() |

Hey guys what are your thoughts on a locking differential? I know someone who has an extra rearend with a Quick Lock set up sitting in his backyard and I'm sure I can get it off of him for a decent price if I asked. Or would I still be best off just welding the diff?

I welded the diff on my 240 about a year ago, then ended up daily driving it for a few months after the other car got banged up.
A little noise on tight turns, a little more rear wear. 100% liveable. also, 100% more fun and stable in the snow/rain. Just be prepped for the slight initial push it causes. Enablers, All of you. |

I've driven a welded diff in a 240sx before so I know about noises while turning and I won't be driving the car daily but probably will drive it occasionally I was just curious as to what you guys thought on the subject. Maybe while I'm in there I should change out the gears too....depending on what I have back there

In the process of removing sound deadening material I managed to poke a hole in the only rust spot I've found in the car thus far. Which is here on the passenger side quarter near the wheel well.
![]() I could properly try and fix this but I was also thinking what if instead I used this spot as a side exit exhaust? Something like this. ![]() Not my original idea for the exhaust on this thing but might be easier than fixing the rust properly and gain more clearence in the rear? What are your thoughts on this? Also I've noticed the rear is sagging which is common on these cars due to old springs. I was doing some looking around online and found factory 12mm springs for $63 a piece, I can get 12.7mm wagon springs for $45 a piece or 13mm hd wagon springs for $39 a piece all of these are brand new parts. I was thinking of buying the hd springs...would this be a good choice? Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 08/13/2013 02:05AM by Steve-O. |
