Volvo 1030 axles

I'd cut BOTH ends of the tubes off, and weld on some Ford 9" style ends, and use 9" style axles, just to get away from having to use C-clips.

One major, major advantage of the Toyota rear.

Without getting really involved (ain't my deal at the moment) seems like a lowly Ranger diff, especially in 8.8 could be made to work? 4.10 gears and LS available stock. Even the 7.5 is plenty tough, they live forever with silly kids and oversized tires. Yes/no??

Looks like a decent candidate, and they even come in a close-ish rear width 56.5in. I'm not sure how the offset pinion/center section would work with the tunnel, are 2wd trucks offset? The 7.5 does gain you 3/4in of ground clearance over the 8.8.

All Ford trucks are offset to clear the gas tank. Mustangs have on-center pinions (or very close to it)

Volvo calipers are great. 2x 1.5 pistons , same pad as Portch 911 Front up to '74 so huge array of pads, cheap---on the car....big disc..

I just don't understand hydro ebrakes Every time i've seen someone try and use one they go way slower. At least when i'm in the car. I could go on but I really don't want to stir fires. I need something to park with and honestly the ebrake in my volvo works hunkydorie. If I can keep it I will.

What about something like this? This is my dads 8n' 3/4 out of a mopar muscle car that he will be adding discs to. Yes it spaces the axles out a bit but he said it isn't an issue for his application. I think he mentioned you can sort it out with end play adjustment.

Granted but is it a big deal, especially on a gravel based sport? Floor clearance is easy, would there be any significant difference in axle wrap or torque transmission on that length difference? What do the offroad Rangers use in their trucks?

Start searching the local circle tracks for old Franklins.... seems like they used to make a kit for 9" Fords back in the day.

Is it a big deal? I don't know, if it's not then great. It would be a big deal for me because the driveshaft tunnel is cramped and no simple way to fix, but I don't have a Volvo so I don't know the Volvo limitations. It's not a big deal for the Mustang guys who swap them into their cars to get disks and 31 spline axles and thicker axle tubes.

As soon as you start talking circle track parts, then the answer is a floater 9", which I realize is the ultimate solution. You can pick 'em up fairly cheap used, and new is shockingly cheap too (say $850 for everything but calipers and center section). Now the axles don't carry any loads at all, and the hubs are on two big roller bearings instead of one little ball bearing that relies on a press fit, if you're lucky. Any gear ratio you want, any kind of diff you want, and it's all cheap because it's the US standard performance rearend.

But now we are, realistically, talking $1500-1800 for a rearend, which is rather straying away from the OP's goal, which was.... wait, what is the goal again?

You guys are forgetting the 2wd Toyota axles are already 5 x 4.5" bolt pattern. I've always used the 2wd axles because they are narrower than the 4wd axles.

You are correct, yet no one seems to believed me when I tell them you can get a 8" and a 5 lug. Some 2wd V6 trucks came with a 2wd width, 8" 3rd members and 5 lugs. I owned one.

2wd trucks with 4-speeds were 8" rears. 5-speed trucks were 7.5". I'm talking about '84-'88 with 22r engines.
